Measurement of shot velocity using particle image velocimetry and numerical analysis of residual stress at two shot peening conditions

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2020
Shot peening is applied to many manufactured parts to improve the fatigue strength of metals by introducing compressive residual stress near the surface. The distribution of compressive residual stress is mainly determined by shot diameter, shot velocity,

Low cycle fatigue life prediction in shot-peened components of different geometries—part I: residual stress relaxation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this study, the residual stress relaxation behaviour occurring during low-cycle fatigue in shot-peened specimens with either a flat or a notched geometry has been studied. A representative low-pressure steam turbine material, FV448, was used.

A Data‐Centric Approach to Quantifying the Forward and Inverse Relationship Between Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process Parameters and as‐Built Surface Roughness of IN718 Parts

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study introduces the first inverse machine learning model to predict laser powder bed fusion process parameters for targeted surface roughness of Inconel 718 parts. Unlike prior approaches, it incorporates spatial surface characteristics for improved accuracy.

Influence of Conventional Shot Peening and Micro-Particle Peening Processes on the Surface Properties of 42CrMo Steel [PDF]

open access: yesCailiao Baohu
To investigate the effects of conventional shot peening and micro-particle shot peening on the surface properties of 42CrMo steel,ABAQUS software was employed to identify the primary and secondary influencing factors of these two processes on material ...

Increasing the Reuse Potential of High‐Strength Steels by Extending the Fatigue Life through Surface Treatments

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Surface reconditioning through mechanical and electrochemical polishing is shown to extend the fatigue life of predamaged 42CrMo4 steel by over 12 times. By removing ≈100 μm of surface material, surface‐driven fatigue damage is mitigated. This study introduces a reuse potential metric to evaluate fatigue recovery and support sustainable steel reuse. Finite Element Analysis of Laser Peening of Thin Aluminum Structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Laser shock peening has become a commonly applied industrial surface treatment, particularly for high-strength steel and titanium components. Effective application to aluminum alloys, especially in the thin sections common in aerospace structures, has ...

The Microstructure and High‐temperature Cycle Oxidation Mechanism of the Nickel‐Based Superalloy Surface Treated by Laser Shock Processing and Ion Implantation at 1100 °C

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 3, 3 February 2026.
Laser shock processingcombination with Hf ion implantation results in dual modification on the surface of GH202 nickel‐based superalloy, which induces a large number of crystal defects, providing channels for the diffusion of metal cations. Hf ion implantation forms an amorphous HfO2 layer.

Evaluation of rolling contact fatigue behaviour of bearing steel subjected to shot peening in a contaminated lubrication

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2017
In this study, the effect of shot peening on rolling contact fatigue life of bearing steel was investigated under contaminated lubrication. Shot peening was carried out on bearing steel SUJ2 specimens. Peened specimens were polished to remove the dimples

Development of a fretting-fatigue mapping concept: The effect of material properties and surface treatments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Fretting-fatigue induced by combined localized cyclic contact motion and external bulk fatigue loadings may result in premature and dramatic failure of the contacting components.
