Numerical modelling of SHPB splitting tests

Journal de Physique IV (Proceedings), 2003
The Splitting or Brazilian test of disks is a useful method to measure tensile strength on brittle materials. When the tensile stress reaches the tensile strength, the disk fails on the loading plane. Nevertheless, the stress state is not uniaxial, and the material undergoes compressive stresses, normal to the tensile ones.

Strain rate design in SHPB test

SPIE Proceedings, 2009
A strain rate calculation formula of split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test is derived from one-dimensional stress wave propagation theory. According to the test conditions and specimen size, the test strain rate can be calculated by the formula; and the strain rate limitative range of SHPB test is analyzed.

Temperature in high temperature SHPB experiments

Transactions of Tianjin University, 2008
As an experimental technique, it’s desired that the temperature in specimen is uniform in high temperature split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experiments. However, the temperature in specimen decreases and the temperature of bars increases when specimen starts to contact with bars, which induces the nonuniform temperature distribution in specimen, and

CORRECTION OF LATERAL INERTIA EFFECT IN SHPB

International Journal of Modern Physics B, 2008
A theoretical analysis of the stress state in specimen of the SHPB experiment was performed in consideration of lateral inertia effect. The nonuniformity of lateral stress in specimen and variety of deforming velocity in the loading process were taken into account in the analysis. A formula to correcting the lateral inertia effect was obtained.

Dynamic deformation behavior of bovine femur using SHPB

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2011
This paper investigates the dynamic deformation behavior of bovine femur using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) with a pulse shaper technique. The shape of the incident and reflected pulses modulated by the pulse shaper were measured and compared to each other to find a suitable thickness.

STUDY OF SMALL DIMENSION SPECIMENS ON SHPB TEST

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
The feasibility and reliability of small dimension specimen SHPB tests were investigated by numerical simulation and experiments of 2024 aluminium alloy with series of dimension. Also an attempt is made to get curves of strain rate over 104 s−1 by small dimension specimens. Accuracy of transmitted signal in eccentric compression tests of small specimen

Enhancing performances of SHPB for determination of flow curves

CIRP Annals, 2001
Abstract A compression test on a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) is the most common testing method adopted to determine material flow curves in a quite wide range of high strain rates. However, in most ordinary SHPB applications material rheology can only be investigated up to a rather low strain.

Dynamics behaviour of gas-bearing coal subjected to SHPB tests

Composite Structures, 2021
Abstract During impact dynamics experiments, the stress waves such as incident wave, reflected wave, and transmission wave were recorded by using a strain data-collecting subsystem. Experimental results showed that the amplitude of reflected wave and transmission wave was lower than that of incident wave, which was closely related to loading ...

Study of Stress Wave Propagation in SHPB with NHDMOC

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
In this paper the NHDMOC method which succeeded in studying stress wave propagation with one dimensional strain was applied to study the one-dimensional stress wave propagation. In this paper, the ZWT nonlinear visco-elastic constitutive relationship with 7 parameters to NHDMOC, and corresponding equations were deduced The equations was verified from ...
