Refection in the Common Shrew

REFECTION or ‘coprophagy’ has been observed in the rabbit1 and in certain other rodents, including the house-mouse and brown rat2; but there appear to be no records of its occurrence in the Insectivora. The habit has now been observed in juveniles and adults of both sexes of the common shrew, Sorex araneus Linn.

A recording method of electrocardiograms in resting animals is described. The electrocardiograms of Crocidura russula, Crocidura leucodon, Crocidura suaveolens, Neomys fodiens and Sorex araneus are similar to those of other small mammals. T-wave directly follows the QRS-complex.
