Towards improved silage quality – A review

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Animal Science, 2001
Silage quality, as with all forages, is governed by the maturity of the crop at harvest. However, fermentation in the silo further influences nutritive value of silage by reducing voluntary intake and utilization of digestible nutrients. Silage research up to the present time has focussed on closing the gap between feeding value of the original crop ...

Grass silage versus maize silage effects on retail packaged beef quality

Journal of Animal Science, 2002
The effects of three preslaughter diets on heifer beef quality were investigated. Heifers (n = 45) were divided into three groups and fed for ad libitum consumption either maize silage, grass silage, or a 50:50 mixture of maize silage and grass silage.

The effect of nitrogen fertilization on the quality of Kikuyu silage

Journal of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa, 1990
Small-scale laboratory silos were used to study the fermentation process of Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst) silage prepared from grass grown at three nitrogen fertilizer levels (300, 400 and 500 kg N/ha/year). Kikuyu grass was cut at three and six weeks growth stages.

Effect of enzyme additives on kikuyu silage quality

Journal of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa, 1991
Chopped kikuyu grass of low digestibility and low in non-structural carbohydrates was treated with three commercial enzyme preparations, namely, Celluclast, SP 249 and Silo Guard II. These enzymes were added to the kikuyu prior to ensiling in laboratory silos with a capacity of 1 kg.

Quality of silage and silage effluent as influenced by storage of effluent in tower silos

Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, Section A - Animal Science, 1997
Silage effluent, normally considered a potential environmental pollutant, can be successfully fed to livestock, but must be stored from the time of drainage prior to feeding. In this study, effluent from ensiled direct‐cut grass was retained in closed‐drainage tower silos, such that silage and effluent were stored together but the effluent was released

YIELD AND QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF SUNFLOWER SILAGES IN HIGHLANDS

2012
This research was carried out to compare the yield and quality characteristics of four sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes (i.e., confectionery Tekirdag landrace, confectionery Erzurum landrace, oilseed Sirena and oilseed C70165 hybrids) and one corn (Zea mays L.) genotype (i.e., SZE TC-513 hybrid) in the Agriculture Faculty of Ataturk ...
