A series of silica gels (Si-40, Si-60, Si-100) and related carbon–silica gels, prepared by carbonization of CH2Cl2 at a surface of silica gels at 550 °C, characterized using FTIR/PAS, SEM/EDX, and nitrogen adsorption, was investigated upon interactions with polar (water, dimethylsulfoxide), weakly polar (chloroform), and nonpolar (n-hexane, n-decane ...

Zone electrophoresis in silica gel and silica paste
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1960Abstract Silica gel and silica paste have been used as anticonvection media in zone electrophoresis. Rapid methods for preparing gels and pastes containing the appropriate electrophoretic buffer, and their use in zone electrophoresis, are given.

Hyaluronic Acid–Silica Nanohybrid Gels
Biomacromolecules, 2013Excessive water sorption and low mechanical properties are a severe drawback in some biomedical applications of hyaluronic acid (HA). A way to improve these properties is here explored through the novel concept of nanohybrid hydrogels consisting of a HA matrix including different amounts of silica-derived species.

Abstract The elastic modulus, modulus of rupture (MOR), and viscosity of wet silica gels were measured as functions of age of the gels, using a beam-bending method. The gels were prepared by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with a water/TEOS ratio of 16/1.

Transcyclopalladation on silica gel
Polyhedron, 2013Abstract A possibility of transcyclopalladation on silica gel was shown using reactions of acetato- and chloro-bridged dimeric cyclopalladated complexes derived from N,N-dimethylbenzylamine with benzyl methyl sulfide, benzyl phenyl sulfide, benzyldiphenylphosphine, 8-methylquinoline and 1,3-bis(methylthiomethyl)benzene in the presence of equimolar ...

The processing and properties of Types I and II fused quartz optics and Types III and IV synthetic fused silica optics are compared with new organometallic sol-gel derived (Types V and VI) gel-silica optics. Type V gel-silica has excellent transmission from 165 nm to 4200 nm with no OH absorption peaks.

ABSTRACTThe driving force for syneresis is generally attributed to the same chemical reactions that produce gelation, but it has also been proposed that shrinkage could be driven by interracial energy. The latter possibility is explored and discounted. The kinetics of syneresis depend on the driving force, the mobility of the gel network, and the rate ...
