Feasibility study of silicon nitride protection of plastic encapsulated semiconductors [PDF]

open access: yes
The application of low temperature silicon nitride protective layers on wire bonded integrated circuits mounted on lead frame assemblies is reported. An evaluation of the mechanical and electrical compatibility of both plasma nitride and photochemical ...

Building like a Coral—Parallelized, Multiscale Biofabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Corals build stiff, strong, and inherently circular skeletal materials under resource‐ and energy‐limited conditions—offering blueprints for transformative materials. We synthesize the current understanding of coral biomineralization and reframe coral growth as a multiscale, parallelized biofabrication process.

The influence of heterogenous porosity on silicon nitride/steel wear in lubricated rolling contact [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Heterogeneous porosity is detected on the surface and subsurface of hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) silicon nitride spherical rolling elements. The extent of the localised porosity accounts for an area of 6% of the rolling element surface and 4% of the

Emergent Freestanding Complex Oxide Membranes for Multifunctional Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review surveys freestanding oxide membranes and covers fabrication and three pathways for studies and devices: strain‐free and strained membranes, and van der Waals‐integrated heterostructures. We show how coupled oxide responses map onto these routes and cross‐couple to expand behaviors.

Scalable and Multifunctional PAN‐MXene Composite Fibers for Thermal Management, Photothermal Conversion, Energy Harvesting, and Sensing for Wearable Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Electrospun PAN‐MXene nanofibers and yarns integrate enhanced thermal conductivity, photothermal conversion, and triboelectric energy harvesting within a flexible architecture. Interconnected MXene networks promote efficient phonon transport, while their surface chemistry strengthens tribo‐negative behavior, enabling a high power density of 432.7 mW m ...

Rolling-element fatigue life of silicon nitride balls: Preliminary test results [PDF]

open access: yes
Hot pressed silicon nitride was evaluated as a rolling element bearing material. The five-ball fatigue tester was used to test 12.7 mm (0.500 in.) diameter balls at a maximum Hertz stress of 800,000 psi at a race temperature of 130 F.

Cr2AlC: A High‐Temperature Transparent Conducting Ceramic

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The high‐quality epitaxial Cr2AlC(0001) layer combines a low resistivity of 42.5 µΩcm, 84% optical transmittance at 900 nm, and thermal stability up to 800–1100°C. It stands out as an excellent high‐temperature transparent conductor with a negligible resistivity size effect, exceptional scaling (ρoλ < 3 × 10−16 Ωm2), and a figure of merit of 0.004 Ω−1.

Advanced ceramic material for high temperature turbine tip seals [PDF]

open access: yes
Ceramic material systems are being considered for potential use as turbine blade tip gas path seals at temperatures up to 1370 1/4 C. Silicon carbide and silicon nitride structures were selected for study since an initial analysis of the problem gave ...
