Thickness-gradient dependent Raman enhancement in silver island films

Applied Physics Letters, 2009
We show evidence of a dependence of the enhancement of the Raman scattering cross section on the length of the gradient in graded silver island films. A factor-of-three increase in the Raman signal is observed for gradients with length of the order of 0.5 mm when compared to gradients of the order of 9 mm.

Optical and structural characterization of silver islands films on glass substrates

Vacuum, 2008
Metal islands films (MIFs) of Ag on glass substrates were fabricated by the e-beam evaporation process. The dependence of the surface plasmon (SP) absorption wavelength on the deposition mass thickness and substrate temperature was quantified. The structural and optical characterization of the MIFs, done by spectrometry, grazing incidence small angle X-

Optical properties of silver-island films having an overlayer of RhB dye

Applied Optics, 1987
The spectra of silver-island films of different thicknesses and of RhB dye adsorbed silver films were recorded in the transmission mode using a photoacoustic spectrometer. The optical transmission spectra of discontinuous silver-island films show a different resonance peak in the spectra corresponding to the different sizes of the island particles. The

Resonance wavelengths of silver–gold compound metal island films

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1995
The resonance wavelength of a silver–gold compound metal island (CMI) film can be easily defined by the control of the mixture ratio of silver and gold. We have investigated its mechanism by observing the film microstructure with a scanning electron microscope.

Silver Island Films for Write-Once Optical Storage Media

Optical Data Storage, 1994
Recently many write-once (WO) storage media have been proposed and investigated, including organic dye and tellurium based alloy, etc. A metal island film is one of the potential WO storage media. It is composed of nanometer-size metal particles (i.e., islands) and exhibits a high reflectance and large absorptance due to the resonance of free electrons

Surface-Enhanced Photopolymerization of a Diacetylene Derivative in Langmuir−Blodgett Films on a Silver Island Film

Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 1998
Surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopy was applied to monitor the photopolymerization process of one monolayer (L = 1) of a Langmuir−Blodgett (LB) film of the cadmium salt of a diacetylene monocarboxylic acid derivative, 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (DA), prepared on an evaporated silver island film with a mass thickness of 60 ...

Preparation and optical property of island silver films embedded in silica

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
Island silver films (nanoclusters, quantum dots) embedded in silica are prepared on silicon wafers and glasses by sputtering. Atomic force microscope is used to characterize the morphology and distribution of silver nanoclusters, the size of nanoclusters varies from several ten to several hundred nanometers.

Near-Infrared Fluorescence Enhancement Using Silver Island Films

Plasmonics, 2006
Near-infrared (near-IR) excitation produces little background signal from biological molecules, making near- IR fluorescence technology highly useful in proteomic and genomic applications. To increase the emissions of near-IR fluorophores, we examined the use of metal-enhanced fluorescence on these longer wavelength dyes.

Preparation of silver island films with tunable surface plasmon resonance

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
Silver (Ag) island films have been prepared by pulsed laser ablation in vacuum using a XeCl excimer laser. The effects of the number of ablation pulses, the temperature and time of post-annealing on morphology and surface plasmons properties of the prepared Ag island films were investigated by extinction spectra and scanning electron microscopy.

Raman spectroscopy of carbon monoxide adsorbed on silver island films

Surface Science, 1990
Abstract CO was adsorbed at 17 K on clean silver island films prepared in UHV. The surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum shows besides the stretch band at ∼ 2112 cm−1 of “chemisorbed” CO an unshifted band at ∼ 2139 cm−1 whose intensity saturates at monolayer coverage. It is assigned to “ physisorbed” CO.
