Design of Simply Supported Beams

2013
In this chapter, the physical model and failure criteria presented in Chap. 3 are used within the framework of current design philosophy for assessing the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement required for an RC beam to satisfy the requirements of current codes for load-carrying capacity and ductility.

Simply supported beams and cantilevers

Chapter 4 examines simply supported beams and cantilevers, emphasizing bending and shear behavior in steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete beams. It begins with classical bending theory and design principles for I-sections, continues with shear stress mechanisms including principal stresses and the strut-and-tie model, and concludes with

Modelling of Simply-Supported Beams

2013
In this chapter, the qualitative description of the beam behaviour presented in Chap. 2 is transformed into a physical model with behavioural characteristics (such as, for example, crack pattern, internal actions, transfer mechanism of external load to the supports, failure mechanism, etc.) similar to those of a real simply-supported beam at its ...

Identification of Crack Location in Vibrating Simply Supported Beams

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1994
Abstract The dynamics of a cracked, simply supported uniform beam is treated for either bending or axial vibrations. The crack is simulated by an equivalent spring, connecting the two segments of the beam. Analysis of this approximate model results in algebraic equations which relate the natural frequencies to beam and crack characteristics.

Vibration of Nonuniform Simply-Supported Beams

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1967
The natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes for nonuniform simply-supported beams are investigated. The deflections are approximated by a Fourier series and in addition to this normal procedure, the mass and moment of inertia functions are also approximated by Fourier expansions.

Large deflection of a simply supported beam [PDF]

open access: possible, 2010
The large deflection of a simply-supported beam loaded in the middle is a classic problem in mechanics which has been studied by many people who have implemented different methods to determine the solution, such as analytical exact solutions and the finite element method.
