Conductance Fluctuations of Generic Billiards: Fractal or Isolated? [PDF]
We study the signatures of a classical mixed phase space for open quantum systems. We find the scaling of the break time up to which quantum mechanics mimics the classical staying probability and derive the distribution of resonance widths.

The SIESTA method for ab initio order-N materials simulation [PDF]
We have developed and implemented a selfconsistent density functional method using standard norm-conserving pseudopotentials and a flexible, numerical linear combination of atomic orbitals basis set, which includes multiple-zeta and polarization orbitals.

The chiral Hall effect in canted ferromagnets and antiferromagnets
The Hall effect is about the generation of a transverse voltage when a longitudinal current is applied and many mechanisms can lead to Hall effect in magnetic material. Here, the authors report a chiral Hall effect that is proportional to the vector spin

Continuous-flow laboratory simulation of stream water quality changes downstream of an untreated wastewater discharge. [PDF]
In regions of the world with poor provision of wastewater treatment, raw sewage is often discharged directly into surface waters. This paper describes an experimental evaluation of the fate of two organic chemicals under these conditions using an ...

Modeling survival times using frailty models [PDF]
Traditional survival models, including Kaplan Meier, Nelson Aalen and Cox regression assume a homogeneous population; however, these are inappropriate in the presence of heterogeneity.

Sensornet checkpointing: enabling repeatability in testbeds and realism in simulations [PDF]
When developing sensor network applications, the shift from simulation to testbed causes application failures, resulting in additional time-consuming iterations between simulation and testbed. We propose transferring sensor network checkpoints between

Selling simulation and simulation results [PDF]
Selling simulation as a valid analysis tool is the first, and maybe the most important, step in the simulation process. Once the decision has been made to use simulation, the analyst must then be concerned with selling the ultimate results produced by the simulation.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

DIY: Creating Performance Assessments that Measure Up!
Introduction The demand for simulation educators to become involved in high stakes performance assessment is growing rapidly. The ability to construct reliable and valid performance assessments, and to evaluate those already available, is necessary in ...
