CFD approaches applied to a single-screw expander

open access: yes, 2016
Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems rely on the expander performance to generate power output in an efficient manner. Especially in the low power range (below 100 kWe), positive displacement (PD) expanders (e.g.

Bias‐Field Free Single‐Frequency CW‐ODMR of Nitrogen‐Vacancy Centers in Diamond for the Detection of Transient Electrical Signals

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Simplified quantum sensing technique for the detection of short electrical signals occurring in neuronal signaling or bioinspired technologies. We demonstrate a single frequency continuous‐wave optically detected magnetic resonance (CW‐ODMR) approach to sense signals that can be as short as 0.2 ms.

Optimisation of two-stage screw expanders for waste heat recovery applications

open access: yes, 2015
It has previously been shown that the use of two-phase screw expanders in power generation cycles can achieve an increase in the utilisation of available energy from a low temperature heat source when compared with more conventional single-phase turbines.

Mimicking Human Perspiration: A Layered Microfluidic Skin Phantom With Tunable Hydrodynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A multilayer microfluidic skin phantom based on thermoplastic elastomers is developed to mimic human perspiration. Spatially controlled wettability enables capillary‐driven transport and controlled droplet formation at the surface, resembling sweat gland behavior.

Femtosecond‐Laser Mould Texturing Enables Tunable Biointerfaces in COC Microfluidics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Femtosecond‐laser texturing of injection‐mould inserts enables scalable engineering of biointerfaces in cyclic olefin copolymer microfluidics. Replicated micro‐ and nano‐topographies modulate surface roughness and wettability, leading to texture‐dependent protein adsorption and cell adhesion without chemical post‐processing.

Comparison of organic rankine cycle systems under varying conditions using turbine and twin-screw expanders

open access: yes, 2016
A multi-variable optimization program has been developed to investigate the performance of Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) for low temperature heat recovery applications using both turbine and twin-screw expanders when account is taken of performance ...

Two‐Way Shape Memory Polymer Composite Gripper for Adaptive Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A two‐way shape memory polymer (SMP) composite is developed with intrinsic shape‐changing capability driven solely by temperature, eliminating external actuation loads. Embedding the SMP in a low‐stiffness elastomeric matrix enabled reversible transformations during heating and cooling cycles.

Advanced Design for Weakly Coupled Resonators by Automatic Active Optimization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
An Automatic Active Optimization (AAO) strategy integrates machine learning predictors and genetic algorithms in a closed‐loop workflow. By iteratively expanding its dataset with new discoveries, AAO overcomes the limits of conventional methods. This approach finds superior microstructural designs beyond the initial sample space. We demonstrate this on

Optimisation of power generation cycles using saturated liquid expansion to maximise heat recovery

open access: yes, 2017
The use of two-phase screw expanders in power generation cycles can achieve an increase in the utilisation of available energy from a low-temperature heat source when compared with more conventional single-phase turbines. The efficiency of screw expander

Using a Cubic Equation of State to Identify Optimal Working Fluids for an ORC Operating with Two-Phase Expansion Using a Twin-Screw Expander [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
For waste-heat recovery applications, operating an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with two-phase expansion has been shown to increase the utilisation of the waste-heat stream, leading to a higher power output compared to a conventional ORC with single-phase
