Vertebral Anomaly in Fossil Sea Cows (Mammalia, Sirenia) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, 2011
AbstractFour incompletely preserved caudal vertebrae lacking the neural arches of two fossil sirenian individuals of Halitherium schinzii (Oligocene) from the Rhine area in Germany and northern Belgium reveal osteological alterations. The caudal vertebrae possess a transverse process with growth retardation.

Targeted Delivery of CNS‐Specific Hesperidin as a Leptin Sensitizer for Treating Obesity‐Associated Sleep‐Disordered Breathing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 45, December 4, 2025.
Hesperidin nanoparticles (HE NPs) effectively combat obesity and sleep‐disordered breathing in mice by enhancing leptin sensitivity. Through suppression of hypothalamic endoplasmic reticulum stress and restoration of leptin signaling, HE NPs promote weight loss and improve breathing during sleep.

The epizoic diatom Campylodiscus cf. clypeus (Bacillariophyta: Surirellaceae), a new symbiont of the Caribbean manatee in Mexico

open access: yesCaldasia, 2018
Observations on the epizoic interaction between diatoms and marine mammals have been conducted mostly in cetaceans and are scarce in sirenians. By scraping the skin surface, the samples of biofilm were collected of a captive male Caribbean manatee in ...

Rescue, rehabilitation, and release of marine mammals: An analysis of current views and practices. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Stranded marine mammals have long attracted public attention. Those that wash up dead are, for all their value to science, seldom seen by the public as more than curiosities.

Iterative evolution of sympatric seacow (Dugongidae, Sirenia) assemblages during the past ~26 million years. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Extant sirenians show allopatric distributions throughout most of their range. However, their fossil record shows evidence of multispecies communities throughout most of the past ∼26 million years, in different oceanic basins.

A Subcircuit in the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Generates Wakefulness

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 39, October 20, 2025.
This study identifies a sub‐circuit within the circadian pacemaker suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) that promotes arousal. This sub‐circuit is labeled by the clock output molecule mWAKE, which suppresses its excitability in a time‐dependent manner. mWAKE‐expressing cells in the SCN (SCNmWAKE cells) project to the subparaventricular zone (SPZ) to mediate ...
