Remarkably rapid, recent diversification of Cochemiea and Mammillaria in the Baja California, Mexico region

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 109, Issue 9, Page 1472-1487, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Premise The Cactaceae of northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States constitute a major component of the angiosperm biodiversity of the region. The Mammilloid clade, (Cactaceae, tribe Cacteae), composed of the genera Cochemiea, Coryphantha, Cumarinia, Mammillaria, and Pelecyphora is especially species rich.

Metamorphosis of spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus and Panulirus guttatus) in the Yucatan Current as inferred from the distribution of pueruli and final stage phyllosomata

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 66, Issue 9, Page 3421-3438, September 2021., 2021
Abstract For spiny lobsters (Palinuridae), the co‐occurrence of final‐stage larvae (phyllosomata) and postlarvae (pueruli) in sampling stations over oceanic waters is indicative of metamorphosis zones, some of which have been found in boundary currents. We hypothesized that metamorphosis of Panulirus argus and P.

Lineage‐specific vs. universal: A comparison of the Compositae1061 and Angiosperms353 enrichment panels in the sunflower family

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 9, Issue 7, July 2021., 2021
Premise Phylogenetic studies in the Compositae are challenging due to the sheer size of the family and the challenges they pose for molecular tools, ranging from the genomic impact of polyploid events to their very conserved plastid genomes. The search for better molecular tools for phylogenetic studies led to the development of the family‐specific ...

An illicit artisanal fishery for North Pacific white sharks indicates frequent occurrence and high mortality in the Gulf of California

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 14, Issue 4, July/August 2021., 2021
Abstract Large sharks shape ecosystems across their geographic ranges and have become a top research and conservation priority. Eastern North Pacific (ENP) white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) aggregations off the United States and Mexico are well described, but their population status is currently uncertain.

Toward integrating private conservation lands into national protected area systems: Lessons from a megadiversity country

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 3, Issue 7, July 2021., 2021
Abstract Private conservation lands are essential for protecting biodiversity, but few national‐level studies have assessed their coverage and the legal frameworks that support them. Here, we review the legal mechanisms enabling conservation on private lands in Brazil and evaluate these lands' potential to reinforce the national protected area system ...

Long‐term community dynamics in vascular epiphytes on Annona glabra along the shoreline of Barro Colorado Island, Panama

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 4, Page 1931-1946, April 2021., 2021
We analysed data from three censuses of epiphytes growing on Annona glabra trees along the shore of Barro Colorado Island, Panama, spanning 21 years. Our study shows that previously reported short‐term patterns of epiphyte community dynamics hold true in the long term.
