Spinosad-induced stress on the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais
Although seldom considered, sublethal insecticide exposure may lead to harmful, neutral, or even beneficial responses that may affect (or not) the behavior and fitness of the exposed insects. Intriguingly, little is known about such effects on stored product insect pests and even less is available regarding the bioinsecticide, spinosad.

Resistance to pyrethroids in the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais [PDF]
The maize weevil is a pest of stored crop products, predominantly maize across humid areas of the world. The Sitophilus zeamais were controlled with pyrethroids until resistance emerged in areas across Brazil. This resistance was found to be conveyed by a super-kdr mutation in the voltage gated sodium channel (VGSC).
