Synchronization‐Dissipation in the Cardiorespiratory System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By modeling central nervous coupling and viscoelastic interactions in the cardiorespiratory system we show that synchronization produces a 10% gain in cardiac efficiency in humans. It is surmised that respiratory sinus arrhythmia improves cardiac pumping efficiency by reducing dynamic stress and power dissipation in the pulmonary vasculature.

A longitudinal comparison of college student mental health under the COVID-19 self-restraint policy in Japan

open access: yesJournal of Affective Disorders Reports, 2022
Background: The coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in substantial mental health problems. In addition to the fear of infection, prevention policies that result in isolation such as lockdowns or, in Japan, “self-restraint,” are associated ...

Inhibitory Decay and Supercritical Brain Dynamics During Sleep Deprivation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep deprivation progressively shifts human brain dynamics from near‐critical toward supercritical states, as revealed by neuronal avalanche analysis of resting‐state fMRI. These changes track subjective sleep pressure rather than vigilance lapses and show marked network heterogeneity. A circuit model suggests that reduced inhibitory efficacy provides

Unraveling the Mysteries of Exploding Head Syndrome: A Narrative Review [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research
Exploding Head Syndrome (EHS) is a rare parasomnia characterised by the perception of loud, abrupt auditory hallucinations during sleep-wake transitions.

Wearable‐Derived Diurnal Alignment Between Physical Activity and Device Temperature Predicts Future Disease and Mortality Risk

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Wearable‐derived diurnal alignment between physical activity and device temperature, decomposed into 24 h coupling strength (M24), phase deviation (D24), and 12 h harmonic magnitude (M12), is examined in approximately 90,000 UK Biobank participants.

Novel digital markers of sleep dynamics: causal inference approach revealing age and gender phenotypes in obstructive sleep apnea

open access: yesScientific Reports
Despite evidence that sleep-disorders alter sleep-stage dynamics, only a limited amount of these parameters are included and interpreted in clinical practice, mainly due to unintuitive methodologies or lacking normative values.

Frequency‐ and Network‐Specific Changes in Functional Connectivity Reflect Pathophysiological Mechanisms across Parkinson's Disease Stages

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly conceptualized as a disorder of large‐scale brain networks, yet whether and how frequency‐specific functional connectivity reorganizes across stages remains poorly understood. In this study, we used high‐density electroencephalography (EEG) to characterize cortico‐cortical functional connectivity ...

Beyond the Outburst: Charting a New Frontier for Understanding and Treating Irritability in Autistic Adults

open access: yesAutism Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Irritability is a prevalent and impairing feature associated with autism, yet remains poorly understood, particularly in adults. Drawing heavily on insights translated from pediatric and transdiagnostic literatures, we propose that irritability in autistic individuals often reflects a psychophysiological stress or threat response, rooted in a ...

Experiencing Extreme Hunger in Anorexia Nervosa Recovery: A Qualitative Analysis of Reddit Narratives

open access: yesInternational Journal of Eating Disorders, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Recovery from anorexia nervosa involves psychological and social adjustments that extend beyond weight restoration. Online forums increasingly serve as spaces where recovery experiences are openly shared, including accounts of “extreme hunger” during refeeding—a phenomenon that has not been reported in the clinical literature.
