Sleep Instabilities Assessed by Cardiopulmonary Coupling Analysis Increase During Childhood and Adolescence

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2018
The electrocardiogram-based cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC) technique may be used to track sleep instabilities. With progressing age, maturational changes during childhood and adolescence affect sleep.

Increased Disease Activity is Associated with Altered Sleep Architecture in an Experimental Model of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yes, 2010
Study Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate sleep patterns during the course of the disease in (NZB/NZW)F(1) mice, an experimental model of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Design: Female mice were implanted with electrodes for chronic ...

Transient Sleep Deprivation Induces Persistent Auditory Neuropathy via ROS‐Initiated Neuroinflammation and BK Channel Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep disturbance severity closely tracks hearing loss in a clinical cohort, yet the mechanistic link remains unclear. Acute sleep deprivation is shown to trigger transient cochlear oxidative stress that switches into a self‐sustaining neuroinflammatory state, suppressing BK channels and causing irreversible synaptopathy.

Editorial on the Special Issue “Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)”

open access: yesLife
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing and is characterized by recurrent episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in oxygen desaturation, autonomic dysfunction and sleep

Sleep fragmentation alters brain energy metabolism without modifying hippocampal electrophysiological response to novelty exposure

open access: yes
Sleep is viewed as a fundamental restorative function of the brain, but its specific role in neural energy budget remains poorly understood. Sleep deprivation dampens brain energy metabolism and impairs cognitive functions.

Towards a Compositional Framework for Describing Human Phenotypes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The Phenotype Assembly Method (PhenoAM) decomposes phenotype variables into measurable Features and typed Qualifiers, enabling standardized, machine‐readable Phenome Data Elements (PhenoDEs) that preserve measurement context. Applied in the International Human Phenome Project (IHPP), the framework yields 58 371 PhenoDEs and supports component‐level ...

Possible negative effects of snoring and increased sleep fragmentation on developmental status of preschool children

open access: yes, 2014
Limited studies have investigated the effects of snoring although harmful neurocognitive effects of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome are relatively well known. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of snoring and fragmented sleep on

AI Powered Biobanks From Static Archives to Dynamic Discovery Engines

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Large language models (LLMs) provide a potential framework for transforming biobanks from static data repositories into intelligent discovery engines. By enabling unified representation and analysis of multimodal biomedical data, LLM‐based systems facilitate dynamic risk prediction, biomarker identification, and mechanistic interpretation, thereby ...
