On the onset of motion of sliding drops
Soft Matter, 2014In this article we numerically investigate the onset of motion of liquid drops in contact with a plane and homogeneous substrate with contact angle hysteresis. The drops are driven by a body force F = ρgV, where ρ is the density of the liquid, g is the acceleration of gravity, and V is the volume of the drop.

New Illusions of Sliding Motion in Depth
Perception, 2005Apparent sliding motion in the so-called Ouchi illusion has been attributed to the global integration of local motion vectors arising from the aperture effect (Fermüller et al, 2000 Vision Research 40 77–96; Mather, 2000 Perception 29 721–727). In a number of variants of the Ouchi illusion, we here demonstrate that sliding motion will also arise ...

A sliding filament model of amoeboid motion
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1969Abstract The capacities of muscle proteins to solate, to gelate, and to contract form the basis for a sliding filament model of amoeboid motion. The discovery of actin-, myosin- and actomyosin-like proteins in amoebae tends to support the model. Filaments of 80 A in diameter are present in both ectoplasm and endoplasm.

Sliding Modes in Electrical Drives and Motion Control [PDF]
In this paper application of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to electrical drives and motion control systems is discussed. It is shown that in these applications simplicity in implementation makes concepts of SMC a very attractive design alternative. Application in electrical drives control is discussed for supply via different topologies of the supply ...

[Proceedings] APEC '92 Seventh Annual Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition, 2003
The authors introduce sliding mode control (SMC) as a counterpart to conventional proportional plus integral plus derivative (PID) control. High performance and tuning simplicity features of the SMC are emphasized and demonstrated through implementation and test results.

This note introduces a general characterization for the global existence of sliding motions, on compact manifolds, in nonlinear variable structure controlled systems. The results are applied, via some illustrative examples, to the case of periodic sliding motions in the plane.

Sliding-Mode Control for High-Precision Motion of a Piezostage [PDF]
In this paper, control of piezostage using sliding-mode control (SMC) method is presented. Due to the fast dynamics of the piezostage and since high accuracy is required the special attention is paid to avoid chattering. The presence of hysteresis characteristics represents main nonlinearity in the system. Structure of proposed SMC controller is proven
