Slip bursts during coalescence of slow slip events in Cascadia

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Slow slip events are commonly observed on natural faults all around the world and are suggested to precede large magnitude and/or high frequency earthquakes.

Motion planning and control of an installation robot for attitude adjustment of arc parts in underground shield tunneling

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Inspired by spiders, the multilegged walk‐through assembling robot for arc parts achieves high‐precision synchronous control under heavy loads through dual‐layer hydraulic pose dynamics modeling and hierarchical pressure optimization, significantly enhancing shield tunneling assembly efficiency and precision.

Unraveling the Origin of Slow Earthquakes

open access: yesEos, 2019
Different nucleation styles detected in five slow-slip events in the same area of Japan’s Ryukyu subduction zone suggest the physical properties along this tectonic plate interface change over time.

Measuring and Modeling Viscoelastic Relaxation of the Lithosphere with Application to the Northern Volcanic Zone, Iceland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Viscoelastic relaxation of the stress perturbation caused by an earthquake or diking event can produce measurable ground deformation over 100 km away from the source. We consider the role of viscoelastic relaxation in two different contexts.

Semi‐analytical solution for the stability of deep vertical shaft considering time‐dependent rock‐structure interaction

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A novel cavity contraction solution and multilayer shaft wall model were developed to analyze deep shaft stability, considering rock viscosity, support structures, and water pressure, with successful validation through a Hulusu Coal Mine case study.

The 2016 Mw 5.9 earthquake off the southeastern coast of Mie Prefecture as an indicator of preparatory processes of the next Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake

open access: yesProgress in Earth and Planetary Science, 2018
Megathrust earthquakes have occurred repeatedly at intervals of 100 to 150 years along the Nankai Trough, situated in the southwest of Japan. Given that it has been 70 years since the last event, the occurrence of the next devastating earthquake is ...

Caving‐enhanced geothermal system overwhelms fracturing‐ and pipe‐enhanced geothermal system in heat extraction

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Our study reveals that caving‐enhanced geothermal systems (C‐EGS) with adequately fractured reservoirs achieve optimal heat extraction by minimizing preferential flow paths, while conventional fracturing (F‐EGS) and pipe‐based (P‐EGS) systems suffer accelerated thermal drawdown.

Tectonic Tremor Explained by Successive Ruptures of Clustered Quartz‐Filled Shear Veins

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
A tectonic tremor is a successive seismic signal observed along plate boundaries in subduction zones. However, the source processes and mechanisms responsible for the tremor remain unclear. Quartz‐filled shear and extension veins are clustered in tens to
