Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Thermo-mechanical interactions in moving fractional Zener nanobeams on a Winkler foundation considering small-scale effects

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal
This study introduces explicit thermoelastic models to explore thermo-mechanical interactions in moving nanobeams situated on a Winkler foundation. By incorporating small-scale effects and memory-dependent behaviors, these models aim to provide a more ...

Einstein clusters as models of inhomogeneous spacetimes

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2020
We study the effect of small-scale inhomogeneities for Einstein clusters. We construct a spherically symmetric static spacetime with small-scale radial inhomogeneities and propose the Gedankenexperiment. An hypothetical observer at the center constructs,

Rotational effects on the small-scale dynamo

open access: yes
Using direct numerical simulations of forced rotating turbulence, we study the effect of rotation on the growth rate and the saturation level of the small-scale dynamo. For slow rotation rates, increasing the rotation rate reduces both the growth rate and the saturation level.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Impacts of Climate Variability on Latin American Small-Scale Shellfisheries

open access: yesDesenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente, 2014
Small-scale fisheries play a vital role in food security and poverty alleviation in Latin America. These fisheries are being increasingly threatened by anthropogenic and climatic factors acting at different spatial and temporal scales.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Characterizing Small‐Scale Gravity Waves Generated by Hurricanes Through Convective Generation and Wind Filtering Effects

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
Small‐scale gravity waves (GWs) generated by Hurricane Sam (2021), Fiona (2022), and Dora (2023) are studied using COSMIC‐2 GNSS‐radio occultation (RO) temperature retrievals and ERA5 reanalysis data set, from which we categorize three GW types that are ...

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...
