Microphysiological Systems for Comorbidity Studies: Chronic Kidney Disease and Osteoarthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights the potential of organ‐on‐a‐chip systems for studying comorbidities, using chronic kidney disease (CKD) and osteoarthritis (OA) as examples. It summarizes recent advances in kidney‐on‐a‐chip and joint‐on‐a‐chip models and discusses their current and potential application in investigating CKD, OA, and CKD‐OA comorbidity, aiming to

A Case of Fistula of Small Intestine and Ileal Conduit Urinary Diversion Improved by Conservative Therapy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A 71-year-old male was admitted for bladder cancer, and we performed a radical cystectomy and urinary diversion by means of an ileal conduit. Twenty days postoperatively, we identified the presence of stool in the stoma and noted the existence of a ...

Effect of 2D and 3D ECM and Biomechanical Cues on Human iPSC‐Derived Liver Progenitor Cell Differentiation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
An engineered microtissue model is developed and optimized to investigate human liver development. Extracellular matrix composition and mechanical forces are tuned using high‐throughput assays. Human induced pluripotent stem cells serve as the cellular source, enabling the observation of de novo patterned differentiation.

Some observations on the transport of food in the alimentary canal of the rat

open access: yesAgricultural and Food Science, 1954
Several series of experiments were arranged so as to study in the rat 1) the effect of the degree of the charge of the stomach upon its rate of emptying, and 2) the rate of passage of the food in the empty small intestine.

A Human Neural Tube Model Using 4D Self‐Folding Smart Scaffolds

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) exhibit features comparable to the inner cell mass of the human embryo. iPSCs are applied to a novel self‐folding 4D‐Neural Tube (4D‐NT) structure that mimics the neurulation process. This 4D‐NT model recapitulates early events of human neural development and represents a platform to explore neurodevelopmental ...
