Defending against smallpox: a focus on vaccines

open access: yesExpert Review of Vaccines, 2016
Smallpox has shaped human history, from the earliest human civilizations well into the 20th century. With high mortality rates, rapid transmission, and serious long-term effects on survivors, smallpox was a much-feared disease.

THE DIAGNOSIS OF SMALLPOX.

open access: yesJAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1902
During epidemics of smallpox the anticipatory attitude of the physician's mind will often lead him to suspect as variola diseases which bear only a superficial resemblance to it. Contrariwise, in the absence of epidemic prevalence of smallpox, mild cases are apt to be overlooked.

No Smallpox in Minnesota. [PDF]

open access: yesJAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1894
Red Wing, Minn., March 6, 1894. To the Editor: Please contradict the report of smallpox in St. Paul. There has been none there this year. The report of students exposed therefore is a mistake. There is none in Minnesota.

Managing and mitigating future public health risks: Planetary boundaries, global catastrophic risk, and inclusive wealth

open access: yesRisk Analysis, EarlyView.
Abstract There are two separate conceptualizations for assessing existential risks: Planetary Boundaries (PBs) and global catastrophic risks (GCRs). While these concepts are similar in principle, their underpinning literatures tend not to engage with each other.

Characterization of Two Historic Smallpox Specimens from a Czech Museum

open access: yesViruses, 2017
Although smallpox has been known for centuries, the oldest available variola virus strains were isolated in the early 1940s. At that time, large regions of the world were already smallpox-free.

Logistics of community smallpox control through contact tracing and ring vaccination: a stochastic network model

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2004
Background Previous smallpox ring vaccination models based on contact tracing over a network suggest that ring vaccination would be effective, but have not explicitly included response logistics and limited numbers of vaccinators.

A generalized-growth model to characterize the early ascending phase of infectious disease outbreaks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
A better characterization of the early growth dynamics of an epidemic is needed to dissect the important drivers of disease transmission. We introduce a 2-parameter generalized-growth model to characterize the ascending phase of an outbreak and capture epidemic profiles ranging from sub-exponential to exponential growth.

Susceptible‐infected‐recovered model with stochastic transmission

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, Volume 53, Issue 2, June 2025.
Abstract The susceptible‐infected‐recovered (SIR) model is the cornerstone of epidemiological models. However, this specification depends on two parameters only, which results in its lack of flexibility and explains its difficulty to replicate the volatile reproduction numbers observed in practice.

A Prospective Study of the Incidence of Myocarditis/Pericarditis and New Onset Cardiac Symptoms following Smallpox and Influenza Vaccination

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Background Although myocarditis/pericarditis (MP) has been identified as an adverse event following smallpox vaccine (SPX), the prospective incidence of this reaction and new onset cardiac symptoms, including possible subclinical injury, has not been ...
