The Journal of Pediatrics, 1957Summary Four hundred fourteen children,ranging in age from 3 months to 12 years, have been vaccinated with smallpox vaccine of chick embryo origin. Fluid, as well as reconstituted vacuum-dried, vaccines have been employed. The results were satisfactory, with a large percentage of susceptible children showing primary takes.

The history of the smallpox vaccine
Journal of Infection, 2006Smallpox was a highly virulent, contagious disease. Initial attempts to control the disease by variolation were controversial and dangerous. Variolation was the subject of some of the earliest published clinical trials. Vaccination was discovered by Edward Jenner in 1796.
