The nucleoid as a smart polymer [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
Science has a close but very complex relationship with technology (Latour, 1987). A simple phenomenon is that technology enables science by offering tools that provide new data or new kinds of data. In other cases, aspects or views of the empirical world may remain invisible until technology builds something that unveils them to the eyes of the ...

Pheophorbide A–Mediated Photodynamic Therapy Potentiates Checkpoint Blockade Therapy of Tumor with Low PD–L1 Expression

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2022
Although the immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) has made a great success in cancer immunotherapy, the overall response rate to the ICB, such as anti–programmed death ligand 1 (PD–L1) therapy, remains only at 20–30%.

Toward Application of Liquid Crystalline Elastomer for Smart Robotics: State of the Art and Challenges

open access: yes, 2021
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are lightly crosslinked polymers that combine liquid crystalline order and rubber elasticity. Owing to their unique anisotropic behavior and reversible shape responses to external stimulation (temperature, light, etc.)

Smart Polymer Surfaces

open access: yesMacromolecules, 2003
A methodology is demonstrated for creating responsive polymer surfaces that can alter their wetting characteristics when exposed to a humid environment. For this, we take advantage of the surface partitioning of block copolymers at the polymer/air interface and utilize a hydrophilic group at the end of the surface-active block.
