Time-dependent entrainment of smoke presents an observational challenge for assessing aerosol–cloud interactions over the southeast Atlantic Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2018
The colocation of clouds and smoke over the southeast Atlantic Ocean during the southern African biomass burning season has numerous radiative implications, including microphysical modulation of the clouds if smoke is entrained into the marine ...

A Prediction Model for Smoke Spread Path in High Rise Building Fires Based on Graph Theory

open access: yesFire, 2023
To satisfy the demand for rapid prediction of smoke transmission paths in high-rise building fires, a graph-based model was developed. The model represents a high-rise building as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) grid model and employs computer simulation ...

High Resolution Emissions Inventory Using WRF-SMOKE-CMAQ Integrated Modeling for Great Vitoria Region

open access: yes, 2018
Atmospheric pollution from anthropogenic activities has been bothering the population of Great Vitoria Region (GVR), Espírito Santo, Brazil. Some people are particularly vulnerable to poor air quality: those affected by health conditions such as asthma ...

AQVx—An Interactive Visual Display System for Air Pollution and Public Health

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2020
Fine particulate matter emissions (PM2.5) from landscape biomass fires, both prescribed and wild, pose a significant public health risk, with smoke exposure seasonally impacting human populations through both highly concentrated local plumes, and more ...

Comparing smoke emissions and impacts under alternative forest management regimes

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2022
Smoke from wildfires has become a growing public health issue around the world but especially in western North America and California. At the same time, managers and scientists recommend thinning and intentional use of wildland fires to restore forest ...

A model to predict the results of changes in smoking behaviour on smoking prevalence [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Public Health, 2003
Data are available on the prevalence of smoking states (never, current and ex). However, data on behaviour change rates (starting - never to current, quitting - current to ex and lapsing - ex to current) are not readily available and cannot be simply derived from or related to prevalence data.A model was constructed to relate prevalence of smoking ...

DNA methylation and expression of MAPRE3 affect overall survival of early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Both cg12821679MAPRE3 methylation and MAPRE3 expression are significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of non‐small cell lung cancer. Meanwhile, MAPRE3 expression significantly modified the effect of smoking cessation on OS. Smoking cessation benefits OS merely for patients with high MAPRE3 expression.
