A longitudinal study of policy effect (smoke-free legislation) on smoking norms: ITC Scotland/United Kingdom [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The longitudinal ITC Scotland / UK survey was used to investigate adult smokers’ support for smoke-free legislation, and whether this support was associated with higher quit intentions at follow-up; either directly, or indirectly, via the mediation of ...

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Risk Prediction Models for Recurrence After Curative Treatment of Early‐Stage or Locally Advanced Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This systematic review synthesizes prognostic models for survival and recurrence in resected non‐small cell lung cancer. While many models demonstrate moderate to good discrimination, few are externally validated and reporting quality is variable, limiting clinical applicability and highlighting the need for robust, transparent model development ...

SmokeNeXt: Dual-Stream CNN-Transformer Hybrid Architecture With Multiscale Adaptation for Satellite Remote Sensing Smoke Image Classification

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Smoke detection by remote sensing plays a vital role in forest fire monitoring owing to its wide coverage and high update frequency. At present, two main challenges remain: 1) the spatio-temporal variability of smoke’s shape and color, and 2) the ...

AN AGENT-BASED MODEL TO REPRESENT SPACE-TIME PROPAGATION OF FOREST-FIRE SMOKE [PDF]

open access: yesISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2018
Agent-based modeling approaches have been used for various case studies related to the geospatial dynamics of complex systems. The proliferation of forest-fire smoke and the associated airborne particulate matter that behaves as complex systems make it ...

Impact of Asymptomatic Intracranial Hemorrhage on Outcome After Endovascular Stroke Treatment

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Endovascular treatment (EVT) achieves high rates of recanalization in acute large‐vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, but functional recovery remains heterogeneous. While symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) has been well studied, the prognostic impact of asymptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (aICH) after EVT is less certain ...

Smoke Detection with Ensemble Modeling

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modeling and Optimization, 2023
This research aims at investigating performance of the ensemble learning method. The ensemble learning brings together various weak learners to create strong learners. Based on this ensemble learning idea, we develop a model for an efficient smoke detection tool.

Air Pollution and the Risk and Progression of Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Air pollution has been linked to several neurological conditions, including stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. Evidence regarding its association with multiple sclerosis (MS) remains conflicting, limited by small sample sizes. Methods PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane controlled register of trials (CENTRAL) were searched on ...

Influence of fire characteristics on the associations between smoke PM2.5 exposure and acute cardiorespiratory health events

open access: yesEnvironment International
Background: Wildland fire smoke is a significant source of PM2.5 pollution in the western United States, with varying chemical composition and toxicity depending on fire characteristics. Methods: We analyzed emergency department and urgent care visits in
