Abstract The main objective of this study has been to investigate the effect of salinity acclimation on parr–smolt transformation and post-smolt performance in off-season Atlantic salmon smolts ( Salmo salar L.). Four groups of potential off-season salmon smolts were raised under a phase advanced simulated natural photoperiod between 26 July and 14 ...

This chapter describes important elements of the parr-smolt transformation (smolting) in Atlantic salmon and brown trout. Smolting is a preparatory physiological adaptation, which occurs in spring prior to the seaward migration. It includes morphological transformation, and changes in salinity tolerance, visual pigments, buoyancy, metabolism and ...

Salt and Water Balance in Salmon Smolts
Journal of Experimental Biology, 1970ABSTRACT Salmon smolts adapted to sea water maintain a high rate of turnover of both sodium and chloride, but when adapted to fresh water the rate of turnover is low. Only a small part of the influx takes place through the gut. On immediate transfer from sea water to dilute sea water or to fresh water the influxes decline rapidly, but on

Abstract Regional habitat and fisheries management planning requires estimates of the capacity of watersheds to produce salmonids. To predict the average abundance of smolts of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch produced by streams and rivers, we related estimates of smolt abundance to habitat features derived from maps and discharge records.
