Is smolting a positive or a negative developmental decision?
Aquaculture, 1998Salmonid life histories are characterised by the ages at which the two primary developmental conversions, smolting and sexual maturation, are made. For Atlantic salmon, the critical seasons at which the physiological decisions are taken are thought to be soon after midsummer for the smolting conversion, and in mid-autumn for the maturity conversion ...

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1990
Abstract 1. 1. Branchial ionic transport capabilities were studied in smolt and post-smolt Atlantic salmon. We used the perfused isolated head technique to make instant measurements of transbranchial Na+ exchange during direct transfer to sea water. 2. 2.

Abstract The timing of smoltification appears to be important for survival and homing in Atlantic salmon. For smolt produced as part of population enhancement strategies, it is important to produce smolts that smoltify at the same time as the wild smolts in the area. Further, both transportation and releasing methods induce stress in smolts which can

Smolt Physiology and Endocrinology
2012The parr–smolt transformation of anadromous salmonids is a suite of behavioral, morphological, and physiological changes that are preparatory for downstream migration and seawater entry. The timing of smolt development varies among species, occurring soon after hatching in pink and chum salmon and after one to several years in Atlantic salmon.

Migration of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts and post-smolts from a Scottish east coast river
2021The near-shore migratory behaviour of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, Linnaeus 1758) migrating to sea for the first time is poorly understood. This study aims to assess whether salmon smolt survival is consistent along the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, through Aberdeen harbour and early in their marine migration out to ten kilometres from shore. This study

Aquaculture, 2001
To examine the combined effects of photoperiod and body size on off-season parr–smolt transformation and post-smolt growth, groups of small and large graded potential Atlantic salmon smolts (initial size 10 and 23 g) were raised under four different photoperiods between 26 July and 14 November.

Abstract We have examined physiological parameters associated with seawater adaptability, growth and energetics, as well as major endocrine regulators of these processes in wild migrating Atlantic salmon smolts and post-smolts from the river through the fjord, coastal areas and the open ocean.

[Unit activities of the salmon Salmo salar preoptic nucleus in Parr, Parr-Smolt and Smolt stadia].
Comptes rendus des seances de la Societe de biologie et de ses filiales, 1976The olfactory and gustatory stimulations with NaCl (10(-5)-10(-2) M/1) bring about certain typical modifications of the preoptic cells activity in the case of "Parr" and "Parr smolt". The "on" or "off" or "on and off" effects are very marked. Unlike the "Smolt" stage is accompanied by an important decrease of the preoptic cells activity, sometimes ...

4 The Physiology of Smolting Salmonids
1988Publisher Summary This chapter describes the different aspects of the physiology of smolting salmonids. Many salmonids—the fish of the genera, Oncorhynchus , Salmo , and Salvelinus —are anadromous and undergo a distinct transformation prior to seaward migration. Several morphological and physiological changes occur during smolting.
