Characterisation and multiphase flow modelling of a rock avalanche turned into a supraglacial debris flow: Insights from Mt Job, British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 5, May 2026.
Photographs before (left) and after (right) the May 2023 landslide in Mt Job, Mount Meager Volcanic Complex, British Columbia, Canada. The initial rock avalanche impacted the glacier, producing a 4.5‐km‐long debris flow that ran over it and down the valley.

Snow avalanche susceptibility in the eastern hillside of the Aramo Range (Asturian Central Massif, Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A detailed snow avalanche susceptibility map of the eastern hillside in the Aramo Range (Cantabrian Mountains) is presented at a scale of 1:25,000. The Aramo Range is one of the major middle-altitude mountains of the Asturian Central Massif.

Why Autonomous Vehicles Are Not Ready Yet: A Multi‐Disciplinary Review of Problems, Attempted Solutions, and Future Directions

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, Volume 43, Issue 3, Page 2254-2341, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Personal autonomous vehicles can sense their surrounding environment, plan their route, and drive with little or no involvement of human drivers. Despite the latest technological advancements and the hopeful announcements made by leading entrepreneurs, to date no personal vehicle is approved for road circulation in a “fully” or “semi ...

On the Flow of Avalanching Snow [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1977
Abstract Variation of flow depth of a flowing avalanche caused by a change in the slope angle is examined using Bernoulli’s energy equation, used in hydraulics to determine a non-uniform steady flow. This equation is modified for a material with internal friction and a strongly curved track.

Aspect Asymmetry in Martian Gullies: A Topographic Signature of Their Formation Process?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract On Mars, erosional‐depositional landforms named gullies provide natural experiments for studying the topographic signature of the processes that act on hillslope evolution. High‐resolution topographic data were used to quantitatively compare the steepness of opposing walls in gully alcoves incised into ice‐rich slopeside mantling deposits.

Two scenarios for avalanche dynamics in inclined granular layers

open access: yes, 2005
We report experimental measurements of avalanche behavior of thin granular layers on an inclined plane for low volume flow rate. The dynamical properties of avalanches were quantitatively and qualitatively different for smooth glass beads compared to ...

Snow Water Storage Within Eight Pacific Coastal Watersheds in British Columbia (Canada) Inferred From Four Years of Airborne Lidar Data

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Maritime mountain snowpacks are among the least understood and most poorly quantified components of global snow water storage, despite their vital role in sustaining water supplies and ecosystem health. Here, we present a 4‐year record of snow mass distribution across eight small‐to‐medium‐sized (5.2–63.4 km2) watersheds within the coastal ...

Probabilistic size effect law for mode II fracture from critical lengths in snow slab avalanche weak layers

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2019
From field observations, dry snow slab avalanche initiation is associated with fracture within relatively thin weak layers under stronger, cohesive slabs.

Forecasting of Volcanic–Flow Tsunamis Through Integrated Data From Laboratory Experiments and the 2019–2021 Stromboli Events, Italy

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Stromboli, Italy, is a unique volcano worldwide with near‐continuous eruptions monitored by a multi‐sensor network. Between 2019 and 2021, three events produced pyroclastic density currents along the Sciara del Fuoco that entered the sea and generated tsunamis, providing a unique data set linking flow dynamics to tsunami generation near the ...

Population Genomics of a Cosmopolitan Weed Provides Insights Into Its Local Adaptation and Recent Demographic History

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 10, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Invasive plant species present a growing ecological and economic challenge, and often adapt rapidly to their novel environments through complex demographic and evolutionary processes. Invasion genomics offers powerful tools to disentangle these processes, but most studies rely on geographically narrow sampling across native and non‐native ...
