Pseudo‐Radar Reflectivity by Applying U‐Net Models to Global Passive Microwave Brightness Temperatures

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Spaceborne radar systems such as the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM)'s core satellite Dual‐frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) provide global insight into precipitation structure, storm morphology, and hydrological cycles. However, their limited spatial and temporal sampling and high cost constrain their ability to continuously ...

Satellite‐Based Probable Maximum Precipitation Estimation and Spatiotemporal Analysis of Rainfall in Nepal Himalayas: Implications for Hydroclimatic Disaster Management

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 5, May 2026.
Graphical abstract illustrating the validation of CHIRPS (1992‐2022) against DHM observations, the analysis of extreme precipitation indices, and the estimation of Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) across Nepal. ABSTRACT Probable maximum precipitation (PMP) is crucial for water‐related disaster management, especially in regions like Nepal, where ...

Current Protections and Future Threats to Say's Spiketail Habitat in the Southeastern USA

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Dragonflies and damselflies are important indicators of ecological integrity and environmental quality but remain underrepresented in conservation efforts, in part due to a lack of quantitative information regarding their habitat requirements. Species distribution models (SDMs) can facilitate conservation planning by allowing researchers to estimate ...

Riparian vegetation diversity in boreal headwaters: Comparing streams, modified waterways, and ditches

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Decades of forest management in the boreal biome have involved digging drainage ditches and modifying streams to increase timber production, altering terrestrial ecosystems and expanding stream networks. Modified waterways and drainage ditches represent widespread novel aquatic and riparian ecosystems, with little known about their ...

A Continuum of Biodiversity: Revealing Marine Tropical Fish Diversity From Intra‐ to Interspecific Variation Through Environmental DNA

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 3, May–June 2026.
This study applies eDNA metabarcoding on conserved and hypervariable mitochondrial markers to assess species diversity in Caribbean marine fishes and population haplotype diversity in grunts. By standardizing biodiversity monitoring across scales, eDNA provides a unified understanding of the processes generating diversity patterns from populations to ...

Landsystems of the tropical high Peruvian Andes: Glaciers, lakes, wetlands and water resources in the Cordillera Vilcanota

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 5, May 2026.
We outline the geomorphological relationships between glaciers, lakes and bofedal wetlands, and the way in which moraines, talus slopes and sandar interact with catchment hydrology in the tropical Andes of Peru. Bofedales are well developed within glacial limits, with glacial processes such as erosion and formation of moraines providing the poorly ...

Wood restoration results in rapid conversion of a degraded plane‐bed channel, Little River, Washington

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 5, May 2026.
The authors document that wood restoration can rapidly and positively affect a number of geomorphic variables to improve habitat conditions for Pacific salmon. Abstract The loss of instream wood can create a legacy of channel incision that is detrimental to habitat formation.

Characterisation and multiphase flow modelling of a rock avalanche turned into a supraglacial debris flow: Insights from Mt Job, British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 5, May 2026.
Photographs before (left) and after (right) the May 2023 landslide in Mt Job, Mount Meager Volcanic Complex, British Columbia, Canada. The initial rock avalanche impacted the glacier, producing a 4.5‐km‐long debris flow that ran over it and down the valley.

From Plot to Catchment: Dynamics of Overland Flow, Topsoil Interflow and Streamflow

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 5, May 2026.
Measurements of near‐surface runoff (overland flow and topsoil interflow) at 14 small and two large runoff plots were compared to streamflow from two sub‐catchments and two catchment outlets, and indicated that near‐surface runoff can be an important and rapid contributor to stormflow in a humid, vegetated and low‐permeability catchment.
