Impacts of glacier retreat, greening, and a changing sediment supply on debris flows in contrasting monsoon‐dominated Himalayan climates

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 7, July 2026.
We modified the SedCas model to assess how glacier retreat, vegetation growth, and sediment availability and erosion timing affect debris flow activity in Langtang and Mustang, Nepal. Results reveal that landscape change reduces sediment supply and runoff response, making debris flows smaller and less seasonally concentrated under future conditions ...

Modelling Climate Change Effects on Groundwater Recharge and Temperature for a Pre‐Alpine Lysimeter

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 7, July 2026.
Climate change is projected to increase winter groundwater recharge and extreme precipitation events in pre‐alpine regions. Groundwater temperatures will rise by up to 26%, primarily driven by air temperature. These trends pose challenges for future water availability and quality, requiring adaptive water resource management.

Sensitivity of Large‐Scale Hydrological Predictions to Precipitation Phase Partitioning Methods Under a Changing Climate

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 7, July 2026.
Future warming shifts precipitation from snow to rain across the Saskatchewan River Basin, reducing snow water equivalent and advancing snowmelt timing. Differences among precipitation phase‐partitioning methods propagate from snowpack accumulation to runoff magnitude and timing, producing earlier spring flows and higher peak discharge.

Evaluating Post‐Fire Salvage Logging Erosion Mitigation Treatments in the California Sierra Nevada, USA

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 7, July 2026.
Multiple pairs of mitigation treatments including logging slash, subsoiling, traffic passes and slope were evaluated over time using a rill simulation experiment to determine which treatments were effective at reducing runoff and sediment delivery from logged hillslopes.

Assessing Causal Drivers of Diurnal Streamflow Fluctuations Using Convergent Cross Mapping

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 7, July 2026.
The aim of this study was to quantify how causal effects (i.e., the influence of one driver on another) among evapotranspiration, riparian soil moisture, and riparian water viscosity induce diurnal streamflow fluctuations. By applying convergent cross mapping (CCM), a causal detection method, we show that evapotranspiration, riparian soil moisture, and

Ensemble‐Based Uncertainty Quantification Can Improve Large‐Scale Precipitation Data for Hydrologic Prediction

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Substantial uncertainties have hindered uptake of large‐scale precipitation data from satellites, reanalysis, and ‘merged’ datasets in hydrologic applications. Whilst this problem could be addressed by quantifying uncertainty and propagating it through hydrologic models, there is little consensus on what form of uncertainty information is ...

State of the UK Climate in 2025

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue S1, July 2026.
This report provides a summary of the state of the UK's climate in 2025. It is one of a series of annual reports published in the International Journal of Climatology since 2018. It presents the latest assessment of UK climate trends, variations and extremes based on the most up to date observations from the land network of weather stations.

Copepod community structure and physiological rates shape the biological pump during early North Atlantic spring bloom

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Zooplankton plays an important role in the biological carbon pump, and zooplankton biomass and community structure can have a large influence on the sedimentation/remineralization balance of the water column. We investigated the potential effects of zooplankton community structure and eco‐physiology on the export and attenuation of vertical ...

Combining the Underwater Vision Profiler 6 with sediment traps to measure in situ velocity of marine particles

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Particles sinking from the surface to the deep ocean play a key role in the biological carbon pump, whose efficiency depends partly on sinking velocities. Over the last decade, in situ imaging has enabled critical advances in our understanding of particle dynamics in the ocean.

Spatial Variability of Permafrost and Active Layer Thickness in a Forested Hillslope of the Taiga Shield

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 37, Issue 3, Page 306-322, July/September 2026.
ABSTRACT Under continued climate warming, understanding present‐day permafrost distribution and the controls on ground thaw are critical for predicting permafrost thaw trajectories and associated implications. This study presents a high‐resolution investigation of permafrost extent and active layer thickness (ALT) across a coniferous forested hillslope
