Conserved charged amino acid residues in the extracellular region of sodium/iodide symporter are critical for iodide transport activity

open access: yesJournal of Biomedical Science, 2010
Background Sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) mediates the active transport and accumulation of iodide from the blood into the thyroid gland. His-226 located in the extracellular region of NIS has been demonstrated to be critical for iodide transport in our ...

Size Increment During Surveillance in Papillary Thyroid Cancer: Evidence Synthesis and Dose–Response Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesCancer Reports, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Introduction Differentiated thyroid cancer has become a prevalent malignant tumor, particularly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), constituting over 90% of cases. Most PTC lesions are asymptomatic and remain subclinical throughout life, and active surveillance is now being used to monitor the progression of these lesions and intervene when ...

Update of the Scientific Opinion on the risks for human health related to the presence of perchlorate in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2014 risk assessment on perchlorate in food. Perchlorate is a contaminant of both natural and anthropogenic sources present in food and drinking water. It is a substrate for the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) and competitively inhibits the uptake of iodide into the thyroid.

Comparison of and as Reporter Genes for Noninvasive Imaging of Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transplanted into Infarcted Rat Myocardium

open access: yesMolecular Imaging, 2011
The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the feasibility of rat sodium iodide symporter ( rNIS ) and human sodium iodide symporter ( hNIS ) as reporter genes for noninvasive monitoring of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs ...

Increased expression of AP2 and Sp1 transcription factors in human thyroid tumors: a role in NIS expression regulation?

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2002
Background Sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) is a key protein in iodide transport by thyroid cells and this activity is a prerequisite for effective radioiodide treatment of thyroid cancer.
