Protonophore activity of short‐chain fatty acids induces their intracellular accumulation and acidification

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The protonated form of butyrate, as well as other short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), is membrane permeable. In acidic extracellular environments, this can lead to intracellular accumulation of SCFAs and cytosolic acidification. This phenomenon will be particularly relevant in acidic environments such as the large intestine or tumor microenvironments ...

Sodium

open access: yesAdvances in Nutrition
Sodium is the major cation of extracellular fluid (ECF) and, due to its osmotic action, is involved in the regulation of extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure (BP). The ingested sodium is almost completely absorbed by the intestine. Circulating sodium is filtered by the glomeruli and its renal tubular handling is responsible for the maintenance

The carboxylate “gripper” of the substrate is critical for C‐4 stereo‐inversion by UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase (UGAepi) catalyzes NAD+‐dependent interconversion of UDP‐glucuronic acid (UDP‐GlcA) and UDP‐galacturonic acid (UDP‐GalA) via C4‐oxidation, 4‐keto‐intermediate rotation, and C4‐reduction. Here, Borg et al. examined the role of the substrate's carboxylate group in the enzymic mechanism by analyzing NADH‐dependent reduction

Tuning the electronic and optical properties of the sphalerite by adsorbing halogen and alkali metals

open access: yesIET Optoelectronics, 2021
TThe electronic and optical properties of sphalerite (ZnS) are modulated by adsorbing alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and halogen (F, Cl, Br, I, At). Simulations based on density‐functional theory are used to study the electronic and optical properties

Requirement of Sodium to Molted Laying Hens [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Poultry Science, 2020
The objective of this study was to determine the ideal requirement of sodium to molted laying hens. The experimental period lasted 105 days, divided into five periods of 21 days. Hisex White laying hens 150 with 84 weeks-of-age were used.

Sodium Taste During Sodium Appetite [PDF]

open access: yesChemical Senses, 2016
Sodium appetite appears to be an excellent model to study the neural mechanisms of motivation. In this issue of Chemical Senses, experiments by St John (2016) challenge 2 hypotheses for how a systemic sodium deficit guides an animal to find and ingest more Na ions in the environment.

Photocatalytic decarboxylative alkylations mediated by triphenylphosphine and sodium iodide

open access: yesScience, 2019
Crowdsourcing a chromophore Photoredox catalysis is widely used to accelerate chemical reactions by channeling the energy in visible light. However, most implementations rely on expensive chromophores to absorb light. Fu et al.

The thioredoxin‐like and one glutaredoxin domain are required to rescue the iron‐starvation phenotype of HeLa GLRX3 knock out cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Glutaredoxin (Grx) 3 proteins contain a thioredoxin domain and one to three class II Grx domains. These proteins play a crucial role in iron homeostasis in eukaryotic cells. In human Grx3, at least one of the two Grx domains, together with the thioredoxin domain, is essential for its function in iron metabolism.

Slow Dynamics in Ion-Conducting Sodium Silicate Melts: Simulation and Mode-Coupling Theory

open access: yes, 2005
A combination of molecular-dynamics (MD) computer simulation and mode-coupling theory (MCT) is used to elucidate the structure-dynamics relation in sodium-silicate melts (NSx) of varying sodium concentration.
