Preferential alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme induction by sodium butyrate
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Cell Research, 1983SW-620, a continuous cell line derived from a poorly differentiated human colon carcinoma, produces two alkaline phosphatases. Under basal conditions the heat-stable, term-placental is the major isoenzyme and the heat-labile, liver/bone/kidney form represents a minor component.

Influence of sodium butyrate on HeLa cell morphology and proliferation
Life Sciences, 1985The effect of one-week exposure to sodium butyrate on HeLa S3 cell cultures was studied with special regard to influence on prekeratin synthesis, by comparison to cultures similarly treated with the known proliferation inhibitor hydroxyurea, and not treated.

SODIUM BUTYRATE PREVENTS LETHALITY OF SEVERE SEPSIS IN RATS
Shock, 2007This study was performed to investigate a novel strategy to pharmacologically inhibit high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) expression with sodium butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid. Using a sepsis model induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), 100 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups as follows: control group (10 rats), sham ...

Selective Hypermethylation of Transcribed Nucleosomal DNA by Sodium Butyrate
Experimental Cell Research, 1994Previous studies have shown that treatment of cultured fibroblasts with millimolar concentrations of sodium butyrate results in increased methylation of cytosine residues in DNA. In this study, active nucleosomes were fractionated from the inactive ones by organomercurial agarose column chromatography.

Effects of sodium butyrate on mouse neuroblastoma cells in culture
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1976Abstract Uncloned and cloned mouse neuroblastoma cells in vitro developed neurite-like processes upon treatment for 48 hr with 10−6 to 3 × 10−4 M sodium butyrate. Although treatment with 5 × 10−4M sodium butyrate caused neurite formation after 18 hr, the per cent of the cells having neurities returned to control level by 48 hr of treatment.

Enhanced Nitrosourea Cytotoxicity in Cell Culture by Sodium Butyrate
Oncology, 1985In HeLa S3 cells, sodium butyrate was found to potentiate the cytotoxicity of chloroethylnitrosoureas and alkylating agents in vitro. Using a soft-agar colony-forming assay, 2.5 and 5.0 mM sodium butyrate pretreatment for 22 h increased the cell killing efficacy of both methyl- and chloroethylnitrosoureas by between 30 and 70%.

Sodium Butyrate Stimulates Somatostatin Production by Cultured Cells*
Endocrinology, 1984Expression of the neuropeptide SRIF can be enhanced by sodium butyrate, a known modulator of gene transcription. Two different cell lines, RIN cells (derived from a rat pancreatic islet tumor) as well as HeLa cells, showed basal secretion of SRIF immunoreactive material that was induced between 5- and 15-fold by sodium butyrate.

Induction of glycolipid biosynthesis by sodium butyrate in HeLa cells
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1974Summary Butyrate inhibits the growth of HeLa cells and markedly alters their morphology as the cells acquire a more fibroblast-like shape by greatly extending cellular processes. Butyrate simultaneously causes an increase in cellular sialylactosylceramide content by elevating CMP-sialic acid: lactosylceramide sialyltransferase activity (7–24 fold ...

Dual effects of sodium butyrate on hepatocellular carcinoma cells
Molecular Biology Reports, 2012Sodium butyrate (NaBu), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, has been shown to inhibit cell growth, induce cell differentiation and apoptosis in multiple cell lines. In present study, we revealed the dual effects of NaBu in regulating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells.

Sodium butyrate induced alterations in lysosomal enzyme activity
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology, 1985Treatment of cultured HeLa cells with 5 mM sodium butyrate causes an inhibition of growth as well as extensive chemical and morphological differentiation. Lysosomal enzyme activity changes have been associated with both normal and neoplastic growth as well as many aspects of the neoplastic process.
