Saltiness of Monosodium Glutamate And Sodium Intake

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1974
To the Editor.— Monosodium glutamate (MSG) was originally introduced for use in foods as a "flavor enhancer," ie, it was added in small amounts to improve the flavors of other food constituents without adding a flavor of its own. However, MSG is sold in shaker containers that direct the consumer to "sprinkle to taste at the table." Used in this manner,

A comparison of sodium-dependent glutamate binding with high-affinity glutamate uptake in rat striatum

Brain Research, 1980
The specific sodium-dependent binding of [3H]glutamate to membranes of the rat striatum was examined and a comparison made with high affinity glutamate uptake. In the presence of sodium, [3H]glutamate binding was saturable and of high affinity. No binding could be detected in the absence of sodium.

Chronic Rhinitis with Nasal Polyposis Associated with Sodium Glutamate Intolerance

International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 2007
The study reports a case of perennial rhinitis with bilateral polyposis. A careful diagnostic workup revealed that the disorder was caused by sodium glutamate intolerance. This is the first study showing an association between intolerance to food additives and nasal polyposis.
