Soft phonon mode and mode coupling in SbSI
Solid State Communications, 1970Abstract In ferroelectric SbSI the soft mode behaviour is studied by means of Raman scattering. It is observed that coupling occurs between the soft mode and a lower-frequency mode which leads to level repulsion between the two Γ 1 one-phonon states and intensity between the modes.

Charge density glass dynamics – Soft potentials and soft modes
Physica B: Condensed Matter, 2012An universal fingerprint of glasses has been found in low-temperature thermodynamic properties of charge/spin density wave (C/SDW) systems. Deviations from the well-known Debye, elastic continuum prediction for specific heat (flat Cp/T3 plot) appear as two anomalies ; the upturn below 1 K and a broad bump at T~10 K (named Boson peak in glasses).

Neutron scattering experiments have clarified that successive phase transitions of CsPbCl3 at 47°C, 42°C and 37°C are basically associated with the condensation of rotational modes of PbCl6 octahedra around the three principal axes. The phase transition at 47°C is caused by the condensation of the M3 phonon mode.

Soft mode behavior in RbH2AsO4

Soft Modes in Molecular Crystals
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1971The self-consistent phonon approximation is applied to study the temperature dependence of the libron and phonon modes for simple molecular crystals. Several linear chain models are studied to illustrate the soft mode behavior of these excitations near the orientational order—disorder transitions that occur in many molecular crystals.
