Fungi associated with soft rot of yams (Dioscorea spp.) in storage in Nigeria

The organisms which cause soft rot of yams (Dioscorea spp.) in storage are identified as Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat., Fusarium moniliforme var. subgluti-nans Wr. & Rg., Penicillium sclerotigenum Yamamoto, and Aspergillus niger van Tiegh. The fungi enter through wounds and natural openings on the surface of the tubers.

Acetylated wood was exposed to decay by brown, white and soft rot in order to address the sorption behaviour of decayed wood. The sorption isotherms were analysed using the Hailwood–Horrobin model. It was found that the different types of decay exhibit different sorption properties.

Observations made on ponded white spruce wood with the electron microscope revealed that initial branching of perforation hyphae of soft rot fungi did not parallel microfibrillar orientation in the S2 wall layer but rather occurred perpendicular to this alignment.
