Language-based software engineering

open access: yesScience of Computer Programming, 2015
We present a language-centric view of the software development process. We argue that success of the domain-specific language (DSL) methodology depends on being able to rapidly craft a DSL's implementation infrastructure. We present logic programming as a rapid way of developing this implementation infrastructure.

Software Language Engineering by Intentional Rewriting

open access: yesElectron. Commun. Eur. Assoc. Softw. Sci. Technol., 2013
We describe a disciplined process of engineering a software language. This is done by systematic reuse of semantic components of another existing language. The constructs of the reference language are analysed and classified by their intent, each category of constructs is then subjected to rewriting.

Evaluation of Perception of Use of a Gamified Platform from the Student Perspective: An Approach for Studying Unified Modeling Language

open access: yesInformatics in Education, 2023
This research discusses the use of a gamified web platform for studying software modeling with Unified Modeling Language (UML). Although UML is constantly being improved and studied, many works show that there is difficulty in teaching and learning the ...

Software Architecture for Language Engineering [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Language Engineering, 2004
Every building, and every computer program, has an architecture: structural and organisational principles that underpin its design and construction. The garden shed once built by one of the authors had an ad hoc architecture, extracted (somewhat painfully) from the imagination during a slow and non-deterministic process that, luckily, resulted in a ...

A Model-Based Approach for Common Representation and Description of Robotics Software Architectures

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Unlike conventional software, robotic software suffers from a lack of methods and processes that could systematize and facilitate development. Thus, the application of software engineering techniques is at the heart of current issues in robotics.

Software language engineers’ worst nightmare [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 13th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Software Language Engineering, 2020
Many techniques in software language engineering get their first validation bybeing prototyped to work on one particular language such as Java, Scala,Scheme, or ML, or a subset of such a language. Claims of theirgeneralisability, as well as discussion on potential threats to their externalvalidity, are often based on authors' ad hoc understanding of ...
