Mapping the “Supply–Demand–Flow” of Ecosystem Services for Ecosystem Management in China

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops a “supply–demand–flow” framework clarifies how ecosystem services move between regions by distinguishing potential and actual supply and demand. Using integrated biophysical–socioeconomic modeling, nine services in China were mapped.

Seed mass and shape are related to persistence in a sandy soil in northern China

open access: yes, 2011
Whether and how seed mass and shape are related to seed persistence in soil is a controversial topic in plant ecology. There is little information on this relationship in sandy habitats. We tested whether or not this pattern is retained among 141 species

ML Workflows for Screening Degradation‐Relevant Properties of Forever Chemicals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The environmental persistence of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) necessitates efficient remediation strategies. This study presents physics‐informed machine learning workflows that accurately predict critical degradation properties, including bond dissociation energies and polarizability.

Seed persistence in the soil on eroded slopes in the hilly-gullied Loess Plateau region, China

open access: yes, 2011
The soil seed-bank is an important component of vegetation dynamics. Its presence affects both ecosystem resistance and resilience. A persistent seed-bank is especially important in disturbed habitats and harsh environments.

Herbicides Effects on Soil Functions: A Review

open access: yes
This review explores the impact of herbicides on soil functions, offering a detailed analysis of how these chemicals influence soil health. Herbicides, commonly used for controlling unwanted plants, often disturb the balance of soil ecosystems by ...

Chitosan‐Carbon Dot Composite Materials Form a Leaf Surface Barrier to Mitigate the Enrichment and Invasion of Nanoplastics: From Leaf Interface to Systemic Response

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Foliar spraying of CS‐CDs can form a film on the leaves of Brassica rapa, effectively reducing the enrichment and absorption of PS in the leaves, while increasing the biomass and nutrient content of the plants. In addition, CS‐CDs can also enrich the interfoliar microbial community and activate the plant's own defense metabolic pathways.

Exploring the Animal Waste Resistome: The Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes Through the Use of Livestock Manure

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Antibiotic resistance is a public health problem of growing concern. Animal manure application to soil is considered to be a main cause of the propagation and dissemination of antibiotic residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic ...

Ruzigrass root persistence and soybean root growth

open access: yes, 2019
Aims Cropping systems using forage grasses as cover crops have been effective in soil conservation and nutrient cycling, but root persistence of ruzigrass (Urochloa ruziziensis) is significant, and may impair root growth of the next crop.

The Third‐Generation Magnetic Super‐Stable Mineralizer: Complete Removal and Separation of Multiple Heavy Metal Pollutants

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The 3rd‐generation magnetic super‐stable mineralizer M‐MgAl‐700 features a core‐shell structure, strong superparamagnetism, large surface area, and abundant oxygen defects. It achieves exceptional Cd(II) and As(V) mineralization capacities, reducing both pollutants in co‐contaminated water and soil to meet national standards.
