Nutrient uptake of pepino plants in soilless cultivation

open access: yesThe Journal of Horticultural Science and Biotechnology, 2001
This study addresses vegetative growth and the uptake of nutrients and their accumulation in the vegetative and reproductive tissues of pepino (Solanum muricatum Ait.). The study was conducted in soilless plastic house conditions, with a planting density equivalent to 25 000 plants ha(-1) during two seasons (1997-98 and 1998-99).

Evaluation of Organic Substrates and Microorganisms as Bio-Fertilisation Tool in Container Crop Production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Microorganisms are only effective when adequate conditions for their survival and development are provided. Among the factors that influence its effectiveness includes the type of soil or culture substrate, which works as an energy source reserve ...

Plant Growth‐Promoting Rhizobacteria Colonize Δ9‐Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid Drug‐Type Cannabis sativa L. Roots and Modulate Cannabinoid Metabolism

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 178, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT Plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) establish beneficial associations with plants, enhancing nutrient uptake, growth, and stress tolerance. Cannabis sativa L., a medicinal plant producing over 300 specialized metabolites with relevant medicinal properties, remains underexplored for PGPR influence on its metabolism.

Internet of Things-Based Smart Precision Farming in Soilless Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenges for Global Food Security

open access: yesIEEE Access
The rapid growth of the global population and the continuous decline in cultivable land pose significant threats to food security. This challenge worsens as climate change further reduces the availability of farmland.

Development of an NFT system of soilless culture for the tropics [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The development of a soilless crop culture system based upon the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) was studied. The conventional polythene gullies used for the NFT in temperate regions were found not suitable for the hot tropical climate.

Economic Viability of Aquaponics Across Global Climate Zones: A Meta‐Analytical Assessment

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquaponic systems are emerging as sustainable agricultural solutions that conserve water and recycle waste, enabling food cultivation in urban, rural, and arid regions. They are increasingly advocated across diverse contexts, yet adoption remains limited due to concerns about economic viability stemming from huge capital investment and low ...

Perfil nutricional y antioxidante post-cosecha de Beta vulgaris L. cultivada en microhuerto sin suelo de baja emisión con nutrientes orgánicos e inorgánicos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Beetroot was grown in an open soilless cultivation system with nutrition supplied by organic and inorganic sources. This low emission system was tested for microgardening high quality red beets with high water use efficiency and less pollutant emission ...

Mitigating Water Salinity in the Jordan Valley: Experimental Evidence for the Effectiveness of Electronic Water Treatment on Irrigation Water Quality and Crop Productivity

open access: yesAdvances in Agriculture, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Water salinity is a major challenge for Jordanian farmers in the Jordan Valley negatively impacting crop yield and soil health. One potential solution to this issue is electronic water treatment (EWT): a novel technology that uses radio wave transmissions to alter the electric charge of dissolved ions and prevent the build‐up of salt compounds.

Hydroponics or Soilless Culture [PDF]

open access: yes
Historically, hydroponics is not a new field; plant physiologists have known and used it for some 100 years. Inevitably, some enthusiasts got carried away.Claims were made of enormous potential yields; skyscraper tops were said to be capable of producing
