2015
The present study aimed to the development of cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS) of the Hellenic eggplant varieties Lagada , Emi and Tsakoniki with the cytoplasm of Solanum violaceum and the study of the inheritance of the fertility restorer genes (Rf-genes).

Genetic variation in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) for Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) under contrasting NO3 - supply.

Journal of Integrative Plant Biology, 2020
Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) yield is highly sensitive to N fertilization, whose excessive use is responsible of environment and human health damages.

Hypolipidemic effect of flavonoids from Solanum melongena

Plant Foods for Human Nutrition, 1997
Flavonoids extracted from the fruits of Solanum melongena (Brinjal) orally administered at a dose of 1 mg/100 g BW/day showed significant hypolipidemic action in normal and cholesterol fed rats. HMG CoA reductase activity was found to be enhanced, while activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase were significantly reduced.

Plastid transformation in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

Transgenic Research, 2009
We have developed a method for plastid transformation in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), a solanaceous plant species. Plastid transformation in eggplant was achieved by bombardment of green stem segments with pPRV111A plastid expression vector carrying the aadA gene encoding aminoglycoside 3''-adenylyltransferase.

EMS-induced streptomycin resistance in Solanum melongena

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1993
Streptomycin-resistant mutations were induced in Solanum melongena by exposing seeds to ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS). Seed mutagenesis resulted in a high frequency of chlorophyll-deficient mutations and a low frequency of resistant shoots, both of which retained their resistance on subsequent testing. Reciprocal crosses between streptomycin-resistant

Anther Culture in Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

2020
For a long time, conventional breeding methods have been used to obtain pure, 100% homozygous lines for hybrid seed production in crops of agronomic interest. However, by doubled haploid technology, it is possible to produce 100% homozygous plants derived from precursors of male gametophytes (androgenesis), to accelerate the production of pure lines ...

Antioxidant activity of flavonoids from Solanum melongena

Phytotherapy Research, 1999
Flavonoids isolated from Solanum melongena (brinjal) showed potent antioxidant activity. Concentrations of malondialdehyde, hydroperoxides and conjugated dienes were lowered significantly. The activity of catalase was found to be significantly enhanced in the tissues of normal and cholesterol fed rats administered 1 mg flavonoid from brinjal/100 g BW ...

Interspecific somatic hybrid plants between eggplant (Solanum melongena) and Solanum torvum

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1988
Mesophyll protoplasts of eggplant (cv Black Beauty) and of Solanum torvum (both 2n=2x=24) were fused using a modification of the Menczel and Wolfe PEG/DMSO procedure. Protoplasts post-fusion were plated at 1 × 10(5)/ml in modified KM medium, which inhibited division of S. torvum protoplasts. One week prior to shoot regeneration, ten individual calluses
