Interplanetary shocks preceded by solar filament eruptions

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1986
We discuss the solar and interplanetary characteristics of six interplanetary shock and energetic particle events associated with the eruptions of solar filaments lying outside active regions. The events are characterized by the familiar double‐ribbon Hα brightenings observed with large flares, but only very weak soft X ray and microwave bursts.

Eruption of a Bifurcated Solar Filament

Solar Physics, 2013
We study the partial eruption of a solar filament observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory-Ahead (STEREO-A) spacecraft on 9 May 2012. This filament was located in Active Region NOAA 11475 and consisted of two distinct branches, separated in height above the active region’s primary polarity ...

Failed Eruptions of Solar Filaments

Astronomy Reports, 2020
Solar filaments (prominences), which suddenly and swiftly ascend, i.e., become eruptive, sometimes decelerate and stop at comparatively low altitudes. Causes of failed eruptions generally remain uncertain. The present study analyzes two eruptive phenomena with very similar initial geometries and configurations of external magnetic fields; one of these ...

Low-energy particle events and solar filament eruptions

Advances in Space Research, 1986
Over the period from August 1978 to October 1982, several large low-energy (E < 1.6 Mev) proton events associated with interplanetary travelling disturbances observed at 1 AU by ISEE-3, appeared not to be triggered by solar flares. Six of them can be associated with filament eruptions as the source of the disturbances.

Height of a solar filament before eruption

Astronomy Reports, 2013
The relationship between the height of a solar filament observed above the photosphere before the eruption on October 21, 2010, and the critical height of a stable equilibrium of magnetic flux ropes in the coronal magnetic field is analyzed. Data from the SDO, SOHO, and STEREO space observatories observing at different viewing angles makes it possible ...
