The planned repair in orbit by NASA of the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) in April 1984 provides an excellent opportunity for improved observations of the sun. In retrospect the solar‐terrestrial research community should have organized new programs before the 1980 launch of this satellite, but foresight is sometimes difficult to achieve.
