The solar albedo of hard X-ray flares

Solar Physics, 1973
The calculations of Compton backscattering from the solar surface of flare X-rays performed by Tomblin (1972) are extended to higher energies. It is shown that the effect is even more pronounced in the 40 keV region and that it can lead to substantial corrections to the observed X-ray spectra.

X-Ray Observations of Solar Flares

1988
Major observational highlights of the last solar maximum are reviewed with emphasis on the results obtained by Japanese Hinotori satellite. Three different types of flares were observed by Hinotori: Type A flares have purely thermal nature, and generate dense superhot plasma throughout the flare evolution.

Prospects for solar flare X-ray polarimetry

Solar Physics, 1988
The history of solar flare X-ray polarimetry is reviewed and it is shown that as yet, there is no experimental evidence for such polarization. The present experimental limits are at the level of a few percent but these results may be biased by a large thermal component at low energies which may decrease the apparent polarization.

On the polarization of the emission of X-ray solar flares

Solar Physics, 1970
X-ray polarization measurements at three flares occurred in October 1969 were performed by means of a Thomson scattering type instrument installed on board the satellite ‘Intercosmos-1’. The polarization (P) at the wavelength of about 0,8 A was detected at the rising phase and at the second maximum of intensity. The obtained averaged value of P for all

Hard X-ray Emission Processes in Solar Flares

Solar Physics, 1987
Solar hard X-ray emission is one of the most direct diagnostics of accelerated particles during solar flares. In this review, the current understanding of hard X-ray emission processes is discussed: first the different emission mechanisms (in particular inverse Compton radiation, energetic ion or electron bremsstrahlung) are presented and the ...

A study of energetic solar flare X-rays

Solar Physics, 1967
A new series of solar flare energetic X-ray events has been detected by an ionization chamber on the OGO-I and OGO-III satellites in free space. These X-rays lie in the range 10–50 keV, and a study has been made of their relationship to 3 and 10 cm radio bursts and with the emission of electrons and protons observed in space.

Influence of Solar Flares on the X-ray Corona

1986
Sequences of X-ray images of solar flares, obtained with the Hard X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) on the SMM spacecraft, reveal many dynamical phenomena. Movies of 20 flares recorded with 6-sec time resolution were examined. We present here a preliminary analysis of the events as a group, and discuss some new aspects of the well-studied 1980 May 21 ...

Solar flare hard X-ray observations

Solar Physics, 1988
Recent hard X-ray observations of solar flares are reviewed with emphasis on results obtained with instruments on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Flares with three different sets of characteristics, designated as Type A, Type B, and Type C, are discussed and hard X-ray temporal, spatial, spectral, and polarization measurements are reviewed in this

Determination of the temperature in a solar X-ray flare

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1973
Abstract The equivalent temperature in a solar X-ray flare for λ ≈ 2 A . is deduced from the measurement of the X-ray flux by Explorer 37 and the simultaneous measurement of the ionospheric electron density by VLF and LF records on the Rugby-Turin link. These data yield the value of the effective photoionization cross section in the band 1
