Rat hindlimb unloading down-regulates insulin like growth factor-1 signaling and AMP-activated protein kinase, and leads to severe atrophy of the soleus muscle.

Applied physiology, nutrition, and metabolism = Physiologie appliquee, nutrition et metabolisme, 2007
Inactivity is known to induce muscle atrophy, which is associated with insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) resistance, but the associated mechanisms remain poorly defined. The hindlimb unloading model has been used to reduce muscle activity.

Fatigability and recovery of rat soleus muscle in hyperthyroidism

Metabolism, 1987
The effect of hyperthyroidism on the fatigue properties of the soleus muscle was investigated in rats treated with T3 (20 micrograms/100 g bw) for 14 (14 d T3) and 30 (30 d T3) days. Maximum tetanic force (Po) was identical in all groups. During 15 minutes of stimulation with 600 ms pulsetrains of 100 Hz at a rate of 60/min, Po declined by 50%, 54 ...

Frequency of bifurcated muscle fibers in hyperthrophic rat soleus muscle

Muscle & Nerve, 1987
AbstractThe total number of bifurcated and nonbifurcated fibers were counted in rat soleus muscles induced to hypertrophy by surgical ablation of the gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles. Sham‐operated and normal soleus muscles served as controls.

Bowman-Birk inhibitor concentrate prevents atrophy, weakness, and oxidative stress in soleus muscle of hindlimb-unloaded mice.

Journal of applied physiology, 2007
Antigravity muscles atrophy and weaken during prolonged mechanical unloading caused by bed rest or spaceflight. Unloading also induces oxidative stress in muscle, a putative cause of weakness.

Effect of Tubocurarine on Human Soleus and Gastrocnemius Muscles

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica, 1982
The effect of a bolus injection of tubocurarine (0.1‐0.13 mg × kg‐1 i. v.) was followed in six young male subjects by registration of the rectified smoothed electromyogram (rsEMG) from them. soleus (71±5.1 (s.e.mean) % slow twitch muscle fibers) and from the m. gastrocnemius (54±3.1% slow twitch muscle fibers).

The hoffmann reflex of the soleus muscle

Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 1980
The H reflex of the soleus muscle was used to investigate the monosynaptic reflex arc of two groups of leprosy patients compared with a similar group of normal subjects. The H reflex recordings show two abnormalities: (1) An increase in the latency of the reflex without difference between lepromatous and borderline patients.

Entrapment Syndrome by the Tendinous Arch of the Soleus Muscle (“Soleus Syndrome”) [PDF]

open access: possible, 1989
Popliteal artery entrapment is mostly found in young healthy males who begin to present increasingly severe symptoms of claudication in the lower leg [4]. Often, these symptoms occur following overexertion or long periods of physical activity. In the last few years, this syndrome has often been diagnosed in joggers and part-time sports participants [6].
