TLR4 Polymorphisms and Expression in Solid Cancers
Molecular Diagnosis & Therapy, 2018Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a type of pattern-recognition receptor (PRR) that are part of the innate immune system known to recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns and thereby play a crucial role in host immune response. Among the various known TLRs, TLR4 is one of the most extensively studied PRRs expressed by immune, certain nonimmune ...

Cancer stem cells in solid tumors
Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2007Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are cells that drive tumorigenesis, as well as giving rise to a large population of differentiated progeny that make up the bulk of the tumor, but that lack tumorigenic potential. CSCs have been identified in a variety of human tumors, as assayed by their ability to initiate tumor growth in immunocompromised mice.

Cancer Stem Cells in Solid Tumors
Onkologie, 2009Carcinogenesis and tumor cell biology are very complex subjects. Recent findings on cancer stem cells may have a great impact on the understanding of the biology of malignancies and the development of future treatment approaches. Cancer stem cells are defined by their potential to self-renew and differentiate.

Bone Marrow Biopsy in Solid Cancer
Acta Haematologica, 2009205 patients with solid cancer, underwent bone marrow biopsy using a Jamshidi needle, regular type. 32 (16%) biopsies were positive for bone marrow metastases. Results were correlated with those of skeletal radioisotope scans, X-ray films and the complaint of bone pain, alone or combined.

Epigenetics of Solid Cancer Stem Cells
2012Epigenetics is an emerging science that can help to explain carcinogenesis. The possibility that carcinogenesis may originate in a stem cell process was proposed recently. Stem cells are generated and contribute to tumor formation during the process of tumor development.

Antiestrogenic Therapies in Solid Cancers and Multiple Myeloma
Current Molecular Medicine, 2006Estrogens are essential for human health. Their physiological effects are primarily mediated by two types of intracellular estrogen receptors (ER alpha and ER beta) that function as DNA-binding transcription factors. However, estrogens are also involved in the development and progression of breast cancers.

MACC1 – a novel target for solid cancers
Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, 2013The metastatic dissemination of primary tumors is directly linked to patient survival in many tumor entities. The previously undescribed gene metastasis-associated in colon cancer 1 (MACC1) was discovered by genome-wide analyses in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues. MACC1 is a tumor stage-independent predictor for CRC metastasis linked to metastasis-free

Primary thromboprophylaxis in patients with solid cancers
Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis, 2014I read with interest the recent meta-analysis by Phan et al. [1] on primary prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with solid cancers. It is a welcome addition to the literature. However, I have several concerns about the accuracy of the data and the interpretation of the results.
