Effect of Liquid Droplets on Turbulence Structure in a Round Gaseous Jet [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
A second-order model which predicts the modulation of turbulence in jets laden with uniform size solid particles or liquid droplets is discussed. The approach followed is to start from the separate momentum and continuity equations of each phase and ...

Measurements of the Solid-body Rotation of Anisotropic Particles in 3D Turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We introduce a new method to measure Lagrangian vorticity and the rotational dynamics of anisotropic particles in a turbulent fluid flow. We use 3D printing technology to fabricate crosses (two perpendicular rods) and jacks (three mutually perpendicular ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Characterization of Friction and Wear Behavior of Friction Modifiers used in Wheel-Rail Contacts

open access: yesInternational Journal of Prognostics and Health Management, 2017
Reliable traction between wheel and rail is an important issue in the railway industry. To reduce variations in the coefficient of friction, so-called “friction modifiers” (carrier with particles) are used. Twin-disk tests were done with three commercial

Particle–Fluid Suspension of a Non-Newtonian Fluid Through a Curved Passage: An Application of Urinary Tract Infections

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2020
The current investigation deals with the inclusion of solid particles in the flow of a non-Newtonian incompressible fluid passing through a symmetric, curved channel admitting flexible walls and exhibiting wavy characteristics for the passage of fluid ...

Geometrical properties of rigid frictionless granular packings as a function of particle size and shape

open access: yes, 2017
Three-dimensional discrete numerical simulation is used to investigate the properties of close-packed frictionless granular assemblies as a function of particle polydispersity and shape.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Cellular automaton model of precipitation/dissolution coupled with solute transport

open access: yes, 1995
Precipitation/dissolution reactions coupled with solute transport are modelled as a cellular automaton in which solute molecules perform a random walk on a regular lattice and react according to a local probabilistic rule.
