The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

On the Formation and Accumulation of Solid Carbon Particles in High-Enthalpy Flows Mimicking Re-Entry in the Titan Atmosphere

open access: yesFluids, 2020
The problem relating to the formation of solid particles enabled by hypersonic re-entry in methane-containing atmospheres (such as that of Titan) has been tackled in the framework of a combined experimental–numerical approach implemented via a three ...

High temperature resistant cermet and ceramic compositions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
Cermet compositions having high temperature oxidation resistance, high hardness and high abrasion and wear resistance, and particularly adapted for production of high temperature resistant cermet insulator bodies are presented.

Solid superheating observed in two-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasma

open access: yes, 2008
It is demonstrated experimentally that strongly-coupled plasma exhibits solid superheating. A 2D suspension of microspheres in dusty plasma, initially self-organized in a solid lattice, was heated and then cooled rapidly by turning laser heating on and ...

High speed synchrotron X-ray imaging studies of the ultrasound shockwave and enhanced flow during metal solidification processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The highly dynamic behaviour of ultrasonic bubble implosion in liquid metal, the multiphase liquid metal flow containing bubbles and particles, and the interaction between ultrasonic waves and semisolid phases during solidification of metal were studied ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Competition for Nucleation and Grain Initiation during Solidification

open access: yesMetals, 2022
Without the addition of any grain refiner, the inclusion particles in a melt will induce heterogeneous nucleation and grain initiation during the solidification of metallic materials.

Role of cell deformability in the two-dimensional melting of biological tissues

open access: yes, 2018
The size and shape of a large variety of polymeric particles, including biological cells, star polymers, dendrimes, and microgels, depend on the applied stresses as the particles are extremely soft.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Effect of tangential swirl air inlet angle on the combustion efficiency of a hybrid powder-solid ramjet [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A new ramjet configuration using powder and solid fuel as propellant is investigated, namely, hybrid powder-solid ramjet (HPSR). Boron particles were used as the powder in this study.
