A History of Thermodynamics: The Missing Manual

open access: yes, 2020
We present a history of thermodynamics. Part 1 discusses definitions, a pre-history of heat and temperature, and steam engine efficiency, which motivated thermodynamics.

The thermodynamics of the surfaces of solutions [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Containing Papers of a Mathematical and Physical Character, 1932
Abstract In his classical treatment of the thermodynamics of capillarity* Gibbs considered the equilibrium of the matter contained within a closed surface (A, fig. 1), drawn so as to cut the dividing surface (S) between the two phases normally everywhere and to include part of the homogeneous mass on each side.

Gallium Microalloying in Bi–Sn Solders: Interfacial Phase Formation, Wettability, and Long‐Term Shear Reliability Under Isothermal Aging

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Gallium microalloying redirects interfacial reactions in low‐temperature Bi–Sn solders from Cu–Sn toward Cu–Ga intermetallic formation. The resulting Cu–Ga layer suppresses intermetallic growth during thermal aging, alters fracture pathways, and improves interfacial stability.

Investigating the Low‐Temperature Phase Stability of the Binary Ta–W System

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Atomistic simulations show that the binary Ta–W system forms ordered intermetallic phases, B2‐TaW and D03‐TaW3, as 0 K ground states. Configurational entropy, however, lowers the free energy of the disordered bcc solid solution, which becomes the stable phase above about 400 K.

High‐Entropy Alloy Interlayers Toward Advanced Joining for High‐Performance Structural Applications: Current Progress and Emerging Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
HEA interlayers offer a versatile route for joining high‐performance structural materials. Their compositional and structural design regulates interfacial reactions, suppresses brittle IMCs, and improves metallurgical bonding. Sandwich interlayers further integrate defect healing with precipitation strengthening, enabling improved strength–ductility ...

Effects of Mg on Microstructure and Solidification of a Hypereutectic Zn–8 wt.%Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An appreciable set of results involving thermal data, microstructure, chemical composition, and microstructural growth laws is reported for ZnAlMg alloys. Such results demonstrate that ZnAlMg alloys have high potential for applications in automotive self‐lubricating components, batteries, and electrical systems.

Impact of the Process Atmosphere During Hot Isostatic Pressing on the Near‐Surface Composition of an Additively Manufactured Austenitic High‐Interstitial Steel

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A high interstital austenitic steel is additively manufactured and postdensified by HIP to eliminate gas porosity. Thereby, the loss of N and Mn in Ar HIP atmosphere is investigated. Further, HIP using N2 atmosphere is investigated which led to excessive nitride formation.

Microstructure‑Dependent Phase Transformations Under High‑Pressure Laser Heating in Additively Manufactured AlCrFe2Ni2

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured AlCrFe2Ni2 with contrasting BCC/B2‐dominant and lamellar FCC + BCC/B2 microstructures exhibits the same pressure‐induced BCC/B2 → HCP transformation. Under laser heating at high pressure, HCP is destabilized, and a cubic BCC/B2 + FCC assemblage is recovered, while the lower‐scan‐speed microstructure transforms at a lower ...

Impact of Hydrogen Incorporation on Electronic and Magnetic Structure of X2CrNi18‐9 Stainless Steel

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Hydrogen uptake in austenitic stainless steel alters both its electronic and magnetic structure. Seebeck measurements reveal hydrogen‐induced shifts in the electronic density of states, while neutron scattering uncovers nanoscale inhomogeneities that grow upon hydrogen incorporation, with the most pronounced effect observed in the PBF as‐built state ...
