The importance of somatic cell count in dairy technology
Mastitis is an important infection that affects herd health, udder health and milk yield of individual animals. Somatic cells (SCs) naturally present in milk are used as an indicator of subclinical mastitis, but also to assess milk quality and safety ...

Twist and Flip to a Lower Somatic Cell Count
Well managed dairy herds frequently have significant clinical mastitis problems due to Strep species, Staph species and other common environmental organisms. In addition, somatic cell counts in these same types of herds frequently are higher than management would like to see.

Milk quality in small farms from Southern Region of Brazil [PDF]
: This study aimed to evaluates some physical chemical aspects of chilled raw milk that meet Brazilian quality standards in smallholder farms from southern Region of Brazil. The fat content, crude protein (CP), total solids (TS), somatic cell count (SCC),

Characterization of distributions of somatic cell counts [PDF]
There is more useful information in distributions of somatic cell count (SCC) than is currently used in practice. Analysis of SCC of individual quarters (n = 450,834 quarter records of 133,102 cows) showed that the presence of pathogens did not change the peak of the SCC distribution.

Distribution of somatic cell count and udder pathogens in Norwegian dairy goats.
Compared with dairy cows, goat somatic cell count (SCC) is higher and probably more affected by physiological factors such as parity, stage of lactation, and season. Thus, SCC is believed to be a less precise indicator of intramammary infections in dairy

Monitoring Milk Somatic Cell Counts [PDF]
The presence of somatic cells in milk is a widely disputed issue in milk production sector. The somatic cell counts in raw milk are a marker for the specific cow diseases such as mastitis or swollen udder. The high level of somatic cells causes physical and chemical changes to milk composition and nutritional value, and as well to milk products.
