Assessment of the South African hake resource taking its two-species nature into account [PDF]

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Marine Science, 2008
The commercially valuable hake fishery off South Africa consists of two morphologically similar species, the shallow-water Cape hake Merluccius capensis and the deep-water Cape hake M. paradoxus. Because catch-andeffort statistics collected from the fishery are not species-disaggregated, previous published quantitative assessment methods have treated ...

A history of recent bases for management and the development of a species-combined Operational Management Procedure for the South African hake resource [PDF]

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Marine Science, 2008
The bases for historical catch limits placed on the hake fishery are reviewed in brief for earlier years and then in some depth over the period from 1991 when the Operational Management Procedure (OMP) approach was introduced for this fishery. The new OMP implemented from 2007 was the first to be based on the use of rigorous species-disaggregated ...

Final CMP projections for the South African hake resource

2014
This document provides final CMP trial results for the revision of the SA hake OMP, following selections and requests made at the 16 September meeting of the DWG. The results cover the four CMPs identified, which are distinguished by two different target average TACs for the next decade, and by whether or not the TAC is fixed at 147 500 tons for the ...

Results of trials of candidate OMPs for the South African hake resource

2006
The anticipated performance, in terms of catch and risk of resource depletion, of two candidate OMPs for the South African hake resources (each with three different resource recovery tunings) is evaluated. Both OMPs are empirically-based, given that this form of OMP has outperformed all production-model based approaches attempted to date.
