Candidate management procedures for the South African hake resource: Draft objectives and testing methodology

2010
Though revised operational objectives should only be finalised through an iterative process as the results of simulation tests of Candidate Management Procedures (CMPs), and hence their trade-off implications, become available, this process merits initiation at the present time.

Overview of the South African west coast rock lobster, hake and pelagic resources and fisheries

2007
The commercial fishery for Jasus lalandii, the South African West Coast rock lobster, began in the late 1800s and at its peak in the early 1950s yielded an annual catch of 17 000t. Although this annual catch has dropped to only some 2000t over recent years, the fishery remains South Africa’s third most valuable in terms of landed value.

Data needed for future stock assessments of the South African hake resources

2013
This paper summarises the data needed (or perhaps needed) as input to the future southern African hake assessments which are to provide the Operating Models for the hake OMP revision exercise due for completion in September 2014.

Development of a new baseline assessment for the South African hake resource, incorporating catch-at-length information

2008
Results are presented for a proposed new baseline assessment for the South African hake resource, incorporating catchat-length (CAL) information in the fit of the model. In years for which age-length keys are not available, CAL information is used instead of catches-at-age (CAA) which had been previously based on averages of age-length keys for other ...

Update on data to be used in conditioning the next reference set of Operating Models for the South African hake resource

2009
MCM/2009/MAY/SWG/DEM-32 summarised the proposed data to be included in the next Reference Set of Operating Models for the South African hake resource. This paper presents an update on the data already specified/provided, and highlights our understanding of where further clarification/analysis is still required before model conditioning (model fitting ...

A gender-disaggregated assessment of the South African hake resource, fitting directly to age-length keys: a new reference case

2009
The assessment methodology for the hake resource is refined to take account of recommendations made by the Panel at the December 2008 International Stock Assessment Workshop to move to a gender-disaggregated model, and to fit directly to age data and estimate growth curve parameters directly in the likelihood maximisation process.

Conditioning of the full set of robustness tests for the South African hake resource to be used in OMP-2010 testing and constant catch projections

2010
Results for conditioning of the full set of robustness/sensitivity tests for the current hake OMP revision process are given, and projections carried out under a constant catch strategy. Although the final one or two CMPs will be checked on the complete suite of robustness tests, only a selected subset of robustness tests will be used to test the CMPs ...

Projections for the South African hake resource for the 2010 reference set of operating models under a constant catch equal to the current TAC

2010
This paper reports performance statistics and plots for projections of the South African hake resource under the twelve operating models comprising the agreed Reference Set (RS) (Rademeyer and Butterworth, 2010a) and using the projection methodology set out in Rademeyer and Butterworth (2010b).

Taking account of the new longline data in the updated Reference Case for the South African hake resource

2014
This paper summarises the assumptions that have been made in previous hake assessments concerning the longline data and makes suggestions for the updated Reference Case.

Progress in checking the code used to condition the operating models for the South African hake resource to be used in OMP-2010 testing

2010
The code used to condition these Operating Models, the results for which have been reported in documents such as MCM/2010/FEB/SWG-DEM/05, has been subjected to careful independent checking by the first author. This checking has focused on aspects leading to the computation of the likelihood upon which this conditioning is based.
